freemark16: hey!
freemark16: how was it
garoftheimagi: It was..
garoftheimagi: Special.
garoftheimagi: Like an continuous orgasm...
garoftheimagi: I can't put it into words...
freemark16: did security stop you
garoftheimagi: HELL YES.
garoftheimagi: ALMOST GOT FUCKING SPRAYED BY MACE GUNS!
freemark16: DID YOU TAKE PICTURES
garoftheimagi: FRIENDS WERE SPRAYED, BEATEN, PUSHED...
garoftheimagi: I ESCAPED.
garoftheimagi: SOME...
freemark16: dyamn
freemark16: any arrests?
garoftheimagi: 20...
freemark16: how many protestors were there
garoftheimagi: Bits of destruction and spray paint.
garoftheimagi: 2000+
garoftheimagi: That was just the Anarchists...
garoftheimagi: Overall, many thousands...
garoftheimagi: Socialists, Liberals, Dissenters, Communists, Anarchists, Pro-Choicers...
garoftheimagi: It was beautiful...
freemark16: hmm. interesting. i certainly don't agree with all of their views but i think it's awesome that you got out there and protested.
garoftheimagi: Yeah...
freemark16: "While protesters along the parade route were mostly orderly, a few skirmishes broke out along some of the checkpoints. About an hour before the parade, a group of black-clad anarchists pelted parade-watchers with snowballs. The incident, near the Navy Memorial, prompted police in riot gear to intervene with riot sticks."
garoftheimagi: Hehe...
garoftheimagi: Not true. I was there.
garoftheimagi: The police were throwing snowballs first.
garoftheimagi: Playfully.
garoftheimagi: We retaliated..
garoftheimagi: The end.
freemark16: wow. it's amazing to read this.
garoftheimagi: Heh.
freemark16: do you suppose there could have been another incident where you were not present?
freemark16: that looked more like this
garoftheimagi: There were plenty of incidents...
garoftheimagi: I got lost twice... So I KNOW there were many incidents..
garoftheimagi: Broken bank windows... Burning flags... Nudity... Brutality...
freemark16: fun stuff.
garoftheimagi: Heh.
freemark16: it bothers me that Bush is isolated from this reality.
freemark16: damn, i wish i had been there taking photos/video
freemark16: i need to do that next inaugural
freemark16: but chances are we'll never have another president this hated in our lifetimes
freemark16: damn, i missed out!
garoftheimagi: Ehj///
garoftheimagi: The march wasn't a success/.
garoftheimagi: The only thing we did was radicalize a few folks, disrupted some mainstream media, traffic and events and got videos of police brutality...
freemark16: what would you have considered a success?
garoftheimagi: Well, a few folks busted through the barricade...
garoftheimagi: Disrupting the ceremony for a bit.
garoftheimagi: If a few more hundred busted through...
garoftheimagi: That would have been a success.
garoftheimagi: Our duty as radicals is to educate and agitate.
garoftheimagi: Behind fences, the ability to do so diminishes a bit.
freemark16: yes..
freemark16: but what would you have liked to happen if a bunch more had broken through
garoftheimagi: Rushed the stage, cause a few more "Technical Difficulties" in the media broadcasts, destruction of property, a riot... You get the picture.
freemark16: basically... anarchy
freemark16: heh
garoftheimagi: Chaos.

Someone wrote this on livejournal, I think it is relevant:

Quote:

If you are old enough and an American, you have the right to vote. You have the right to an opinion and free speech.

You do NOT have the right to see the man of your choice in the White House.
People who vote for the other guy aren't stupid, brainwashed, or evil. They are your friends and family. Someone you love almost certainly canceled out your vote. (My best friend canceled out mine.)

If, by some chance, everyone you know votes for the loser it won't mean the election was stolen. It will only show that you live in a bubble.

If the election didn't go your way, don't pop off as though America were Guatemala under the generals. You'll get lots of attention, but it won't be the kind you want. People will laugh, not near you but at you.

I have no political opinion, but I do have a hatred for the illogical or superfluous. I also believe that synergy is the best way to accomplish a goal. If you view everything as a win-lose relationship, no one wins because the loser tries to tear the winner down. Believe it or not, those of differing political opinions are just as concerned for the national welfare as you are. Synergy- the total is greater than the sum of the parts. Think about that.
The "other side" of the political spectrum is not your enemy. They are just people with different points of view. Stop saying that liberals hate America. Stop say that conservatives hate America. This land is so great because it is a melting pot. Grow up and start acting like Americans.
I think I agree with the sentiment here. Somewhere along the way we forgot that the other party are just opponents. Even the Yankees and Bo Sox, who HATE each other, shake hands after the game is over regardless of who won.
I may or may not agree with the initial sentiment of the protestors, but I don't approve of trying to break through a police barrier. The barriers are set up because thugs and miscreants like to hide in crowds while they steal, maim or destroy. I don't care how much I hate a person, I'm not going to break the law and bust up innocent people's property to make my voice heard. It's still possible for us to work together, and a lot more will be accomplished. If some pride has to be swallowed, so be it.

well im glad they at least dont think it was a success. I cant say I sympothize with anarchists communists and the like.

and stories like this and this really make them seem like hypocrits.
Quote:

Hundreds of people gathered at both ends of Meridian Hill Park in Northwest Washington for a peace rally sponsored by the D.C Antiwar Network.
But there were interlopers: Thirteen members of ProtestWarror, supporting the Bush administration and its policies in Iraq. When the Bush supporters arrived, about 20 black-clad, self-described anarchists emerged from the crowd, shouting profanity and epithets and demanding that they leave the peace rally.

When the Bush supporters refused to leave, the anarchists tore the sign out of the Bush supporters' hands and stomped on them. When ProtestWarrior leader Gil Kobrin objected, several male anarchists knocked him to the ground, kicking him in the back and punching him. Other anarchists punched and shoved Kobrin's 12 colleagues.

After D.C. Antiwar Network members broke up the fight, the Bush supporters heeded their order to leave the park. Kobrin then called D.C. police, who are now guarding them at the entrance of the park as they hold up their pro-war signs. "We're going to hang tight," Kobrin said. "We're expressing our freedom of speech just as they are expressing theirs."

there are some days where i want to hang my head and cry over the state of this fine nation. my question is why there has never been an independent president. this, i believe would be the solution.

Meister 01-21-2005 01:22 PM

I guess that's what they're anarchists for. More specifically, what they became anarchists for. I can safely say I'm on the protesters' side, but hey guys, way to do a peaceful protest there. Sure won't make you all look like morons.

Oh well, there's always the odd one who's in it for the rioting, I guess...

adamark 01-21-2005 01:25 PM

Well, it's guarenteed that any sort of percentage of an organization will actually work against what the organization's purpose is. there are those rogues and rebels and hypocrites. you'll find that anywhere. the anarchist i was talking to was a peaceful protestor. there was really no reason to break out the mace on his group.

but regardless of their reason, as i said in that chatlog, i'm glad they protested and i'm somewhat proud of them. even communists -- whom i hate -- i support their right to protest and i'm glad that they take advantage of it. we're better because of it. we're better because of them.

ChaosMage 01-21-2005 02:19 PM

I feel like its relevant, so I'll attempt to reproduce some accounts from people in my school who went to the innaugruation for a school trip:

"There were signs, some of them were really wierd. I saw a bunch of signs that said 'Thank God for the Tsunami' 'God Hates Fags' and the like."
"There was one lady, dressed like the statue of liberty but she had chains all over. Good idea, but she looked really dumb."
"I was standing in line one place, and this lady on her cellphone turns around and looks at me and says 'Jesus loves you.' and then turns back around."
"When Bill Clinton came on, I was the only person in a whole crowd of people who cheered. Everyone looked at me like they were going to pummel me to death."
"I saw this one huge billboard someone was carrying that I didn't get. It was an aborted baby...ugh. It was really graphic. And then one person was passing out pamphlets that said 'The American Holocaust' that I didn't even want to look at, because I could guess what was inside."

God dammit people. Can't we grow up? My english teacher pointed this out -- America seems to have issues disagreeing intelligently. In other countries when there is a protest, its done in an intelligent way. In America, we show pictures of dead babies, advertise our intolerances, and proclaim as loudly as we can that we hate people who aren't just like us all while telling everyone else we're the greatest country on Earth. I'm not saying everyone should agree. That'd be dumb and not very healthy. But can't we disagree without hating eachother?

Bob The Mercenary 01-21-2005 03:05 PM

I have a friend who's an anarchist. One day he explained to me pretty thoroughly just what anarchy was all about. And, in theory it would be perfect. But mankind is evil by nature and will always screw each other over. Anarchy assumes everyone is good.

But, I still respect them going out and protesting. Even when I'm for things that are being protested, I still respect the others' opinions. What the police did isn't forgivable. Where is the love, people, where is the love?

Arlia Janet 01-21-2005 03:45 PM

I'm not sure what exactly the police did. I read the two articles. Apparently they broke up some shoving matches. And I'm always a bit skeptical of these claims because I have actually seen some people I know (who are self proclaimed pacifists) start punching a cop who asked them to take a few steps back away from the mounted officers so they wouldn't spook the horses. When they were arrested, they swore up and down that the cops hit them first. I went out of my way to give an affidavit to the court.

Cops almost never go out and beat protestors for shits and giggles. Mace is usually sprayed when the crowd starts hurting the cops or hurting each other.

Robot Jesus 01-21-2005 05:44 PM

Its more common then you might think
http://archives.cbc.ca/IDC-1-73-367-.../apec_protest/
Then compare Canada’s reputation for police brutality with Americas.
