What does RPG mean to you?

Many people have a different idea of what makes a game an RPG. To me, RPG's are games where your charactor is different than everyone else's. That includes games like Everquest and Final Fantasy 11. What do you think?

P.S. I like black mage :bmage:

RPG's: Roleplaying Games. So an RPG is any game where you roleplay as someone, mainly on a quest.

It goes more then just the name RPG... Everyone game then would be an RPG... RPG's usually have several characters, you level up, random battles and turned based(Changing now though), buy items and weapons from stores, better plots then other games(Usually), uh... Other stuff

Yes, I knew I was missing something. Most RPG's also have side quests, buy stuff to upgrade you character (weather it be weapons, spellbooks, or badges (remember Paper Mario is a RPG to)). It also dosen't have to be turn based either, just have to attack each other untill you or the opponent dies.

RPGs are where you can customize your character or your team members through things like equipping new weapons, learning new magic or skills, equipping new armor, and making them more powerful in certain areas to fit your needs.

Also, a plot that will change depending on how you act would be what I definitally call an RPG. Sadly, there aren't many of those.

Add in the element of randomness (in attacks etc.), and I concur.

Randomness is also good. Unless there's TOO MUCH randomness. (Skies of Arcadia. A battle every 3 seconds.)

Although, IMO, no randomness makes a game just not an RPG... Take Zelda, I don't consider it an RPG, just an action adventure

(great, now we're getting into that whole 'is zelda an RPG thing...')

Do you consider RPGs without random battles RPGs, like Kingdom Hearts... Can't think of other examples at the moment...
