For me, just simply FFVIII.

Suikoden II and Chrono Trigger tie as a second for my favorite for many reasons, but when I factor in how much fun I had playing it PLUS what RPG is amazing on a detail, length and style standpoint....FFVIII just wins for my personal pick.

Definitely Final Fantasy 6 and FF 7. But, keep in mind that I haven't played most modern RPG's due to a certain, shall we say, break I took from video games in the past. Damn it's hard to catch up properly.

Also about FF8, I never understood why people hate it so much. It's maybe not that great compared to other Final Fantasy games, but it's nonetheless an outstanding game.

I love the cusomization those three games provide. Suilkoden made it much more unique with being able to take non combat oriented characters into battle...not to mention having your own castle!
