What's wrong with his left hand? That particular angle poses a lot of challenges and I'd say you did rather well. (If it's his pinky finger that you think looks wonky, It should be almost entirely hidden by the one in front of it anyway. It doesn't stand out as a big error.)

His hat and horns, and the perspective's affect on them turned out great. Very 3D.

Fire is hard! It goes against everything line drawing stands for, because it doesn't have edges! Nevermind it being pure light and colour. I find Pokemon handles it rather well, adding an orange section along one side of the yellow flame.
The trick that I use primarily is to keep from having a solid outline on it. I've only got a hard edge going along the thickest parts around the base of the flame. All the other edges are ragged (not unlike drawing torn cloth or rough feathers, which you're good at) and their lines don't all touch.

If you are using colours, taking advantage of the white areas to create "edges" works wonders! I have not actually outlined the fire with the blue.

I dunno, my friend said his left hand looked really weird and off, and she is often right about these things, so I thought I might be missing something. The only thing I see wrong with it is his fourth finger which seems to have turned into negative space somehow.

Yeah, I'll say. ~_~ In previous drawings I've tried looking up some pictures of fire for reference, but for the reasons you just gave, that didn't help much. Also, you just don't see too many lingering magical fireballs in the natural world. Thanks for those technique examples, too, that's very helpful. I can see by your last drawing that you know what you're talking about.

Speaking of that... man, I dream that the world is ending all the time and it does tend to be a calmer event than you'd expect.

Everybody just sort of sits down and says goodbye, eh? It's the calm that disturbs me the most.

Glad to be of help! Good lord that phoenix was a bitch to do. I actually erased small pencil sections at a time and quickly coloured yellow over before I forgot where the lines had been. So slow.

You bastards and your dream rememberance. I can never remember my dreams. Sometimes after being waken up after 5/6 hours of rest I'll have faint impressions...but never any more.

I can't give much more advice about fire, other than what Nivarath said. Romara, I really like the clothing you draw, it has a lot of thought and detail in it. Clothes are usually the things that give me trouble as far as knowing "hmm a belt would look cool here" or "a piece of ribbon here" so, great work. ^^

Niverath - Awesome phoenix! And great job with the flame effect.

And I haven't drawn much, but I amused myself for a moment with this little thing I did today:

I don't use markers much, but I thought it was cute.

Awww! so cute! <3 FMA.
I'm gonna try coloring this piece:

I think I finally got a grip on a more realistic style here, anything I should fix before I get too far into the coloring?

Khael! 05-28-2007 12:21 AM

Just make sure to choose an angle beforehand so when you do the lighter parts/shiny shading on the sword, it matches up with the shading on the rest of the character. I've done that too many times to count. :gonk:

Romara 05-29-2007 01:18 AM

Mkay...did the colors. How's this?:
[Edit] Took the pic down, a better one is below [/edit]
Any and all critique is appreciated, brutality encouraged ^_^'

That doesn't look bad, but I think it looks flat. The shading colors are too close to the base colors. Try darker shading for more contrast. Also--for a touch of hypocrisy, since I rarely do backgrounds myself--do ANYTHING but a gradient fill background of one shade. At least make it two colors, or not centered, or use more than two colors... and draw a shadow under her or something to make her not be floating in pea soup. Finally, I think her sword should be shinier. It doesn't really look sharp on top.

Romara 05-29-2007 11:15 AM

But I like soup :( ...
Anyway, I deepened the colors, added an actual shadow, as well as put in a background...with shadows. Better?

^^' freakin backgrounds. So ungrateful they are!
