Man.. I totally didn't mean for this post to be this long...

Haha, wow. You're right. It totally does. I wasn't really going for anything too innovative in terms of drawing style (it was really just a rather nifty doodle that just grew from there), what I really wanted to do was really try out coloring it. And also, experiment with the smudge tool for that misty effect at the bottom.

What do you color with? I like the sorta cel-shaded look your pictures have.
It's a really simple process really. You just go through the standard process of doing all the flat colors (which is obvious). After all that's done, you create a layer over the flat colors but under the lines (with some exceptions), and from there, I use the brush tool.

For shadows and highlights, I just select the flat color and open the color palette by double clicking on the foreground, and depending which I'm doing (shadow or highlights), I chose a color in a diagonal direction (up for highlights and down for shadows) from the initial color. Here's a picture for better explanation:

http://i32.tinypic.com/dfv5e.png

Why diagonally? Because I think that giving it more saturation helps it feel more 'real'. Of course, you can experiment with color choice, it all just ocmes down to personal preference really.

Now, for the actual shading, I choose the solid brush. Those fuzzy-edged brushes are really no good when highlighting and shading. And what I do is set the opacity reeeeeally low.I usually mess around with about 8-12% opacity. After that, you just click, click, click to where you see the shadowing and highlights seem fit.

I find this tutorial explanation pretty well. Of course, that tutorial uses different brush settings and what not, but the process I use is identical to what is in the video.

THA:
Dude, that's awesome. The folds on his pants seem like it's too much, though. Also, his torso seems a bit too long. His nose looks like it got smushed and to me, it looks a bit painful. Cool drawing none the less.

Celes:
Woo! New blood!

Alright, I'd like to start off by saying that this:

I draw stuff. Badly.
Is filled with nothing but lies and slander. Seriously. That is just simply amazing. Not sure if it was intentional or not, but that reminds me of a mech Okami. I've been working on drawing mechs and I've just been failing miserably. It's just takes practice and I'll get to that level of skill soon enough.

And whether it should go here or not, despite the title, this is a general post your art thread. Whether it be a sketch or a drawing that's been done on the computer.

Celes 04-30-2008 11:24 PM

:3 Thanks for the warm welcome, Savage~

Well... I don't think I'll ever stop seeing my stuff as sucking, even if I improved leaps and bounds from here, so I guess I'd better leave it at a "thank you" before I get any more self-deprecating. XD

And yes, that was supposed to be a Megaman/Okami crossover thing for the deviantArt contest thingy... xD I totally left doing anything until the last minute though... and I guess I was sort of hard up for inspiration when I never played it... hence the Capcom crossover. @_@;; I don't really draw mechanical things at all, so I suppose it's a valid excuse for me to be bad at them. Hehe...

CelesJessa 05-01-2008 09:56 AM

I'm just going to do the most recent stuffs because... well I don't want to comment on the little argument in here. Sorry for all of the farther back stuff.

Savage Thinking - He looks so happy. ^^ A very unique style, I think. Strangely, I particularly like his pointy tongue.

TopHat - Hah Brute Force, is that his name? That's great! And holy crap, he has a lot of weapons. One question: What's behind him? I see a red shape between his legs but I'm not sure what it belongs to. Also, that is a TIGHT shirt. =D

Celes - Welcome! (I particularly like your choice in screenname (Celes rocks, yo) Although now I might get confused with another Celes around. :D ) Ironically, I think your title (the "not an opera floozy" one) was one of the first ones I used too. XD Aaaanyway. That drawing rocks. I think you did a fantastic job with making it look mechanical. Very nice.

I decided to scan some of my pages of my notes for school and share the sketches I do in the margins (I get bored easily, especially in dance history class, which is what all of these sketches are from). Apparently I like to draw Samus during my class.

The girl on the bottom is actually someone in my class, I hope she didn't think I was weird when I was looking at her and drawing her. ^^;;; Oh well, I was behind her, so maybe she didn't notice.

There's an actual page of my notes. I take fantaastic notes /sarcasm.

I am constantly in a struggle to design a new armorless Samus because I don't particularly like her Zero Suit design (Especially her hair.) Although, suited samus will always be cooler, so I draw her more. =D

They're just a bunch of sketches, little to no erasing, so they're pretty messy.

Does anyone know if this is where I would post my photoshop stuff, or should I make a new thread for photoshop.

I guess that might depend on what you did with photoshop. Since most all of my completed works are colored with Photoshop, and I put them in here.

Might as well post it here and find out.

Psh.. Looks like we're gonna hafta take that kind of mentality out of ya. >>

CJ:
I'm lovin' those poses. Gives off that 'feminine but will still whoop your ass' look. Also, on that second picture, with the eye and nose, is incredible. Seriously, just really sticks out to me.

Anyway, here's another sketch I did with the tablet by drawing over a picture of me. Again. This one is a side view picture. I really love the shadowing.

Celes 05-01-2008 07:43 PM

CelesJessa - Ooh. Dang. I knew my old screenname would catch up with me. xD;; Too bad "Morphine" was already taken here... Thanks so much though~

Savage Thinking - Well poo. I'm old and stubborn and stuck in my ways. You can't change meeee...

>_<;; It'd be nice to have recent finished stuff... but I guess for now, today's offering from the junk folder... xD;;

Wah! No fair, another person who's much better than me...T_T

*mope*

:p

...Is what I would have said earlier, but now I feel a lot better. Yay!

I didn't draw anything today because I was too busy moping, but expect a lot of drawings in the next few days.

mauve 05-01-2008 09:53 PM

Awesome Samus, CJ!!

Hmm... maybe I should get my notebook sketches scanned one of these days...

Celes (NOT JESSA!! :p ) - I agree with Savage that the wolf has an Okami feel to it. ROBO-KAMI!!!! :D

Love the anime chick too.

As for me, I've been fiddling around in Paint on my laptop again, and I came up with this dude. The bottom left is the latest version-- I'm still working on fixing his nose and jawline and a few other things. Then I gotta figure out how the rest of his body should look. o.O

Savage Thinking - Very nice! I love it. How do you go about the process of drawing that kind of style? (like the shading and all of the lines) although I wonder why the lips aren't shaded as well. It might be a style thing, but it makes them kind stand out against the rest of the shaded picture (or it makes him kind of look like he's wearing lipstick :D) I love the way that you do hair.

Celes - Very nice, I am loving her braids and her bangs especially. One thing though, I can't quite tell what's going on with her arms. At first glance, the furry fabric looks like a cape (to me), and I think it's supposed to be, but, to me, it looks like it's all behind her, instead of maybe wrapping around her (like I think what is going on), so her arms are kind of lost to me. Other people might not feel that way, but I've been looking at it for awhile trying to figure out where the arms would be, and I'm still unsure. Very awesome drawing though! I love it!

Mauve - Very awesome. For some reason, I like the uncolored bald one a lot. It has a very nice shape to his head. It really looks fabulous. I think the nose looks fine, although the jawline might need to be brought down a little bit (which is strange, because the jawline looks great in the little black and white drawing hmm...) Maybe it's the lips that throw off the jawline. Still, very nice!

I finally got ALL of my art assignments back from this semester, but I have no camera at the moment. Hopefully I'll be able to share them relatively soon (don't be expecting anything like realism or anything. It was a design class, so they're all a bunch of exercises on different principals of art (such as line creating a focal point, how colors effect each other, line quality, etc...) But I think they look cool. =D
