The Matrix Online

The NDA has finally been lifted, the dark cloud that was once over our heads that prevented us from speaking about this game are finally cleared!

For those that are Beta Testers who would like to talk about the game, please feel free to do so.

Well, was it good? Is it worth getting? How does leveling/experience/fighting/abilities work? I'm not a beta tester, just curious and half-heartedly searching for an MMOG.

Well, money isn't money. It's information. You can spend information on abilities from Vendors, clothing and weapons. but it is also used for the levelling of abilities. The best thing about MxO is... one day you are a Martial Artist, the next you're a Code Blasting nuker(Hacker) and then a item crafting Code smith(Coder). As long as you have the info to get your abilites up to your level of character, you can change classes. And/or mingle classes for a better build of character. Just like The Matrix movies, you load up what abilities you want to use while you're "Jacked-In". You want to be a Kung Fu master, you can be one. You want to be a bad ass duel pistol wielding duelist, you can be.

Combat is the best. Ranged combat, code nukes, area attacks are all well and good, but nothing beats the all new Interlock Combat system. Close quarters combat takes on new meaning as you battle against your enemies with guns or hand to hand(no blade weapons as of yet). The system is based on skill(leveled abilities) and combat rolls. Different fighting styles combined with certain abilities make you a force to be reckoned with.

Another nice feature is the integrate AIM network. when you create your character with MxO, you automatically get a name registered with AIM. Upload your buddylist and chat with your friends who are outside of the system while you play the game.

I am a Beta Tester and a proud member of The Collective. The largest and oldest Machinist clan in the MxO universe.

hmm, interesting. how's the structure of the game looking? i mean like stability-wise. obviously its still beta, but how smooth is the net code?

G.I.R. 02-14-2005 03:53 PM

Stability is good. The game, right now, is set for release on March 22nd. A date which is close approaching. I, for one, will be buying the game.

I'm a little hazy on the item-crafting aspect of it, as you mentioned for the Coders, and replayability. Is it sort of just "Jack in for thrills" or is there a leveling system so far? Sounding like Guild Wars' micro-management to me.

Psrdirector 02-14-2005 05:43 PM

i like guild wars. It looks interesting, but i have gotten a lot of people saying it isnt really good and just hoping the 2nd and 3rd movie didnt kill the fan base

Coders are one of the more important classes. You gain an ability by obtaining an Ability Code and uploading it into your system(hovercraft computer) via a Hardline. You can then equip said ability as long as you have enough memory space and level requirements. But, mid and high level ability codes are only available through coders. They have to craft the abilities for you. As well as some of the higher end clothing that buffs, weapons and accessories.

The levelling system is very simple. Certain skills in each ability tree can be levelled up. When you level the said skill or ability, ie Combat Toughness, you gain points in Melee and Ranged damage. If you level up Kung Fu master, you gain points towards damage you do in combat when using your Kung Fu skill. Each ability tree also has special attacks for combat. Coders get pets to guard them, Hackers get Viruses to launch at the enemy, Spies and Assassins get special attacks that you can only perform when stealthed or in disguise. Soldiers and Martial Artists have special abilities, some that can be used in Interlock Combat to gain the upper hand, and others than can be used outside of combat in order to take down enemies without having to engage in close range combat.

Another example of levelling up: HyperJump skill. When I level this up, I gain the ability to jump higher and farther. Thus making it a more viable means of transporation as well as a means to escape mobs such as Agents or mobs that are higher level than me.

www.thematrixonline.com has a lot of information concerning ability trees and such.

It really is a fascinating game to be a part of and I can't wait til they start releasing story arc into the game to really help with immersion.

I don't want to be negative about it, but in all reality purposes...I don't think the game could come out to be the way I think it should. Then again, MMORPGs never seem to do what I think they should, both out of limitations of the game but also sometimes just cuz the programmers are lazy.

Even in the one MMORPG I'm interested in, Star Wars Galaxies, they have done a TON of things that could have been done better in just another way...but they are either lazy or something....

I think the Matrix Online should be you start off as a person in the Matrix who seems to be seeing strange things going on constantly. Then someone comes and takes you 'out' (this person would be a 'runner' who is a real player) and then you train and work outside the matrix, at Zion, to become a runner yourself. Then you go in, destroy agent held places, disable parts of the Matrix and help newbies out of the Matrix yourself.

But I can guarantee they didn't do it like that...Just like how in Star Wars Galaxies there should be the Padawan and Master Jedi system with a real life person who's a Master taking on Padawans to teach them to be Jedi. But instead you spend 6 months at a hidden 'villiage' doing various 'missions' to become Jedi....
