I swear, "Roleplay" means nothing to people

Making a gnome with pink hair named "Britneysspears" in WoW on a Roleplay server makes me sick. It's like people just forgot about fantasy worlds and the whole "Roleplaying" part of the server and just decided to god-damn make stupid names. It's retarded. Blizzard's also too busy trying to fix the servers to be able to do anything.

I actually had this conversation with someone
"Why don't you roleplay, this is an RP server."
"I came here because there's less stupid people here."
"Yeah well, if you don't roleplay you just added one more."
"Welcome to ignore, jerk."
"It's a ROLEPLAY SERVER! ROLEPLAY!"

I understand going to a RP server because smarter people are there adn there's no "omg I r 1337!!!" asshats to deal with, but come on; it's a roleplay server and that tag isn't some sort of joke, some prank designed by Blizzard. It's not really the "Cool people" server. I want to roleplay but recieving this as a whisper annoys the crap out of me.

"r u willing 2 trade 4 ur sword?"

Come on. At least put "OOC" in the front so I know you're not totally retarded.

Oh, and I almost forgot my favorite part of this scheme:
Malachi
Malakai
Malakhai
Maulikai
Milikai
Maulikhai
Mualikai
Mulakai
Mealikai

Damn, that's some inventive shit right there. Give them all literary awards.

Your thoughts?

In MUDS, it's generally stricter, though there are always those who manage to slip through for at least some of the time.

I like helping people out in games. I really do. However, I hate it when people don't use full words and sentences when there's room and time to ask. Names that aren't really names really piss me off sometimes. The worst of it is when they insult you for no apparent reason, and you know that they never bother to roleplay.

I do feel better when jerks prove their stupidity, though they don't usually have the good grace to seem embarrassed.

As for the names-It's not that big a deal, so long as it can be a name by itself. Remember, in real life there are hundreds of Johns, Joes, and Jasons out there.

Does it...matter? The internet brings out the stupidity in all of us and it shows on MMORPGs...because to play them you need to be online. When you play a 1 player console game, or even a 2 player one, there are many ways developers keep you from doing dumb or annoying things, or just let you cuz like only 1-4 people are going to see it anyway. On an MMORPG, there are tons of freedoms which is one of the best points of the game...but also allows for the annoying people to take the name 'Gandalf' so no one can use it and make an archer out of the character. But your not gonna be able to do anything about it...ok?

didn't DAoC enforce roleplaying on it's servers? i think thats a good idea. i mean, if you're going to go out of your way to make specific RP servers, you might as well enforce it. i don't think its all that crazy of an idea, i mean PvP is forced on the PvP servers, why shouldnt there be enforced RPing on the RP servers?

So in other words "Why bother complaining, it won't get fixed?" I'm just irritated about how people take "Roleplaying Server" to mean "Cool People Only Server" when the fact is it's clearly outlined by Blizzard that you go there to Roleplay.

Yes it brings out the stupidity in all of us, but I want to have to deal with the occasional "Galstaff_The_great" and not an overwhelming swarm of them.

But the thing is, the people in charge are in a bit of a tight spot in this situation. Sure, they could enforce RP'ing to preserve the vision and intent of what the game is supposed to be. However, when you're dealing with paying customers, they do rely on those monthly subscription fees to keep the game running. I can say that without a doubt, if I were forced to play a certain way or be banned and have my money go to waste, I certainly wouldn't play.

In the case of PvP-type MMO's, that style of play is dictated by the situation as opposed to the terms of service. Essentially, to survive in the game you would have to engage in PvP, because if you don't, you're just standing there while the other guy whacks you to death. It's a bit different from RP'ing, where it doesn't have a direct effect on the gameplay, but rather on the interactions you have with your fellow gamers. Now, one could argue that a RP'ing player might actively engage in PK'ing someone else for not RP'ing, but that's a whole different ballgame, and in most MMO's would probably be categorized as griefing.

Ultimately, it boils down to money. Sure, there are servers dedicated to Roleplaying on some games, but as long as the publisher is getting their monthly fee and you're not doing anything to directly affect gameplay for others in a negative context, they probably won't care.

Not necisarily. when you play an MMO, you're expected to adhere to a code of conduct (the user agreement that most games have you electronicaly 'sign' before logging in). this means that you can't walk around shouting "fuck" at everyone you see. if you act like a big enough ass clown, you will get banned from a server. how different is it to say that on an RP server, you must act ic-character while speaking on public channels? i'm not saying they'd have to enforece good RPing, or that they'd have to enforce it in private conversations or anything, but it would be nice.

absolutely, i agree. and with blizzard being the money loving whores who bend over backwars to the whims of the winy 12 year olds that they are, i doubt they'll change thier practices anytime soon. which is a shame.

someone should just form a campaign to "rid the world of those possessed freaks" (via pk) after all, that's what someone in an actual midevil setting or whatever would think of someone who was wandering around shouting "I R TEH KOOL!"

I think all comes down to Penny Arcade's Internet Fuckwad Theory .

Some people are asses and have fun by ruining yours. Just try to ignore them, and they'll go away.
