English Majors?

Hey, rescently I have begun reconsidering my major, and at the moment the only one that comes to me seems to be to change my major to English. I mean, I was originally planning on getting my Ph.D in Computer Sciences, but lately I just can't seem to find the desire to stay my current path, and I also just can't seem to see the "bigger picture" when it comes to programming like I used to. I know it's not from a lack of understanding. but a lack of motivation... I might remain with my original plan, but it just doesn't seem as appealing as it used to. Was wondering if anyone would give any advice on the subject, especially anyone who is majoring in either CSCI and/or English, pros and cons and what not, jsut need more input before I make my decision... thanks in advance!

And no one better say don't go English since I have troubles spelling :p It;s jsut becuase I try to type a lot faster than I am capable of doing :p

It all boils down to whether or not you want to have a job that pays in money and not potato chips after you graduate.

In all hoensty I'm one of those people who could still be happy without money... a lot happy WITH it, but I don't want to make this decision on money... thanks for the honesty though

Okay, speaking as someone who is pursuing an English major, let me tell you this. Prepare for a LOT of writing and reading. Essays galore and such, different types of them, and later on, research essays, which are usually around 8 pages long.

On the other hand, You have a whole lot of careers to choose from, depending on your strengths. You could be an editor for a magazine/newspaper/whatever, an English teacher, a writer, a journalist... there are many different paths to take, depending on what you might choose to minor in. The pay isn't as good as a computer science career, but you said yourself that you didn't mind that, so no problem there.

On a side note, you should know that the average college student changes his/her major three times, so be sure to keep your options open. Also, though, remember that the first couple years should be focused on core classes and general stuff. Work on the specific classes later.

That help?

every English major i know is totally anal about spelling and grammar and sentence structure. because everyone who wasn't anal about those things dropped english as their major.

As Princeton from Avenue Q said:

"What do you do with a B.A. in English? What is my life going to be?"

I love that musical.

I do have to admit... he's right, as pretty much anyone in the AIM chatroom will tell you. :p

In any case, good luck on whatever you major in, N98. :)

You said the spelling was because you type to fast, yet still you didn't go back and proof read, which you better get used to doing. But you really have to decide, do you really enjoy english, or are you just good at it. I started out CSI, and like you got bored with it. I tried English briefly, and while I enjoy it, I don't enjoy it that much. So now I'm a music major.

I changed mine like six times, so does that make me an above average college student?

While your major could determine what field you go into, it's not as if your major limits you to any great extent. If that were the case, every philosophy major on the planet would be dead or dying. Unless you're looking to go into a specialized field, all you need is a B.A. in something.

If it does pose problems, then there's always graduate school.
