Breaking the Habit

I'm quitting smoking cold turkey. I haven't had a cigarette in just over 3 weeks. So if you've been wondering why I've been retaining alot of grump lately it's my addiction talking. Right now I'm craving a cigarette like nobodies business. I have been for almost a month. It's like an itch you can't scratch.

I've never seen a discussion on addiction so feel free to talk about your addictions (physical, chemical, and mental)

first of all, good for you! its extremely admirable to quit smoking, and i particularly respect those that do so cold turkey.

personally, i have no chemical addictions, for which i am glad. i was raised to shun all things that bring on addiction (i dont even drink more than one or two dr. peppers a week cuz of the addictive caffiene). MY problem is addiction to reading...i tend to procrastinate more important things if i happen to be in the middle of a good book.

Good job man, i myself have never "quit" an addiction as "lessend it's evil impact". IE: Switching from cola to diet cola.

Do they make light ciggerates or something?

Robot Jesus 02-22-2005 04:16 PM

Light cigarettes are no less dangerous that normal, but then again they half to be better than camels; you can tar you roof with half a pack.

There was some government funded research to create a safe cigarette but the funding was cut because it would look bad for anyone to be working with cigarette companies.

Personally while I do have a few harmful habits (pot, booze) the only thing I would consider myself addicted to is Chinese food. If I don’t get some ginger beef at least one a month I get the shakes.

I was definetly a video game addict. I have cut down in recent years, mainly because of maturity and fiscal problems. I still can justify spending an entire weekend on gaming though.

And sleep. I'm addicted to sleep.

For fun: To quote the infinitely wise Stewie Griffin........"I love crack, I'm cuckoo for crack!"

Squishy Cheeks 02-22-2005 05:39 PM

I wouldn't count sleep as an addiction since it's a biological imperitive. Like consuming protein, oxygen, and water. You can't live without these, but I wouldn't call them addictions.

Go for it man. I used to smoke as well four nearly 4 years while I was in HS. Strange thing was that I never really decided to quit smoking. I knew it was bad for me but that never really seemed to matter. Then one day a finshed one and never picked up a another one and to this day I've never had to give in, although once in a great while I'll have a random craving. I guess I just don't have a addictive personality. Anyway, stick with it man quiting an addiction is one of the hardest things a person can do, I still haven't been able to kick the caffine.

Good for you Squishy. Hopefully you last longer than I did. I've quit three times and I'm smoking again. I tend to keep my smoking to work though. Its pretty rare that I have to smoke when I'm at home.

I'm also heavily addicted to caffiene. If I don't have my nicotine and my caffiene before work, I'm dead tired until I finally get it.

Personally though, I don't see much wrong with my addictions. I quit smoking before due to financial issues.

I'm well aware of the health risks associated with smoking.

I must also extend my congratulations Squishy. Having talked several people into and through quitting smoking, I'd say the best thing to do would be to have someone you can have intimate chats with on a regular basis about what you're thinking/what you're going through, what you feel like etc. And make sure they understand your commitment to not smoking and how strong it is, because they can be a strong help reminding you why you're quitting if your determination wavers.

Its wierd... I'm not so much addicted to caffine, even though I have 2-3 pops (or sodas, for everyone else) a day. I don't go crazy if I go weeks having non-caffinated beverages. Maybe its the sugar.

Good luck on the smoking thing. I don't personally smoke, but my other family members do. It sucks because then it smells like I do. Stupid nose.
