The Weekly Top 5
Ok, so here's a random thought I had. Random, but I think it has merit to it and most people will enjoy it. I'm going to make this new thread and in it I am going to, each week, post the name of a company. And then you will follow and post your top 5 games from that company. They can be just your favorite games from the company or what games you think were made the best or whatever. Don't have to put them in order or you can, go for it. And if you want to tell us why you picked any one or all of them, tha'd be great to. Also, discussion on others picks are greatly welcome (although don't just be like OMG why'd you pick that F****** piece of crap!!!111four).
So, without any other delays, here's the most appropriate company probably to start it off (and also the one that I thought it up with): Squenix (Officially known as SquareEnix) My top 5 - 1) Final Fantasy VIII - Just one of the most well-made RPGs I have ever played and one I love to level in. 2) Chrono Trigger - Same as FFVIII but also get's bonus points for being so original to other RPGs (even to this day) and I admit, the first RPG I liked. 3) Final Fantasy VI - AndI admit, this was thefirst RPG I ever played...but I didn't like it. But after playing a few other RPGs and coming back, I found it was amazing. 4) Seiken Densetsu 3 - Look at Chrono Trigger. 5) Chrono Cross - Although not like Chrono Trigger, which is a bummer, and more like FF in many ways, it brought its own level of originality and turned out to be a fun game just to play. And if you cared to do side quests and go for all the characters, its level of development really showed. Keep in mind Enix fans...I've never played one of their games. So...fill in the gaps for me. -_- And let's just keep it to 5 so we all have a common amount and so, well....descriptions don't get long. |
1) Terranigma - One of the best SNES games ever made and quite possibly the best Zelda-style action/RPG out there.
2) Final Fantasy Tactics - Not as good as Tactics Ogre (the cramped battlefields, tiny unit counts and over elaborate level-up scheme detract from it a lot. I want the strategy to be primarily in the battles themselves, not in the character-customisation screen) but still far and away the best game to bear the Final Fantasy name. 3) Dragon Warrior IV - Among the best traditional RPGs ever. Enough plot to make things interesting and to give the characters personality, while still showing enough restraint to keep the game from being an exercise in slogging through endless dialog boxes and cut-scenes, as so many other entires in the genre tend to be. The chapter system was a brilliant way of keeping things fresh and interesting throughout the game's length, and the auto-battle system kept the battles from becoming tedious. 4) Actraiser - Great blend of action and strategy, although the sequel sucked. 5) Rad Racer - Sure, the 3D gimmick wasn't that great, but it could be easily turned off leaving you with one of the best racing games of the 8-bit era. |
Pretty much limited to the RPGs here, for me...
1) FFVII - Not just another Fanboy raving about it, here. This game had an excellent plot and characters, and pretty much set the standard (for me, at least) on RPGs in the newer generations of video gaming. 2) Chrono Trigger - One of the best games of its time, and still one of the most original games out there, with great replay value, considering. 3) FFVIII - A unique game among the FF series, with an unusual magic system, and a great storyline. Plus the card game rocked. :p 4) Chrono Cross - A sequel of sorts to Chrono Trigger, keeps up the originality, and had a huge variety of characters, along with a great storyline, and an awesome musical score. 5) Star Ocean: The Second Story - A great game with plenty of sidequests, and a lot of customization, one of its only drawbacks is the graphics. Still a good game to pick up and keep you playing for hours on end. Plus, there's over 100 endings. o_O |

Wow...I never knew Actraiser was a Square or Enix game. You learn something new everyday. |
It was published by Enix and developed by the same people who made the Sould Blazer series (Soul Blazer, Illusions of Gaia, Terranigma.)

Hmm, this is quite a tough one. No matter what I pick, there's going to be other, equally awesome stuff I'll end up leaving out. In no particular order:
Dragon Warrior III - Probably my favorite out of the whole series, for reasons unknown. I've owned it since it originally came out, and I still don't think I've ever actually beaten it; I always got destroyed by Zoma. Great NES-Era RPG though. I'm not sure if it predated FF3j, but at least in the US I believe it was the first game to implement a 'Job system'. I never did quite get a good party balance down... Soulblazer trilogy - Sure, it's three games, but they were all quite good, each improving drastically on it's predecessor. Actually, scratch the first two, they really pale in comparison to Terranigma. I do still love them... but they just can't stack up. Xenogears - While it was rife with translation mishaps and wasn't the most visually amazing game, I still regard this as my favorite RPG of all-time. With a fairly unique combat system, incredible soundtrack courtesy of Mitsuda, and of course one of the most mind-boggling stories in RPG history, it was definitely a landmark title. It's just too bad Square decided to shaft the budget for this title in favor of FF8, but it is their cash cow, so I suppose you can't blame them. FFVII - Yep, still my favorite of the traditional FF series. It's a tough call, as FF6 is on par in terms of quality, and FF4 still holds a lot of nostalgic value for me. I suppose if anything, the atmosphere and plot probably appeal to me a bit more. Secret of Mana - Nostalgia is definitely a big part in this choice. This was way fun for multiplayer, and I think it perfected the blend of Action to RPG elements. It also had a mostly fantastic OST, it's a shame the composer hasn't done much else (I think this game's sequel is the only other game he's done). And I'll include FFXI as an honorable mention (That's six, I know ><); I really don't think it's anywhere near one of Square's best games, but I have sunk close to 600 hours into it thus far, so I think they deserve credit for holding my attention as long as they have. |

Oh shoot...I totally forgot about this thread last week. Man, here, I'll put the next one up. Dispite not many people doing it but hey, I did SquareEnix first and its their loss that they missed their chance to put stuff up for that company...
And so, the next company is...du nah! Capcom. And my 5 are: Resident Evil 1 Remake - One of my few ever random 'go to the store and randomly buy' perchases turned out to be one of my favorite games. I haven't played any other RE titles, but if they're like this one, I'll love 'em. I'm definitely getting 4 later. Capcom vs SNK 2 - Wow, I play this almost every day.... Mega Man IV - I don't play all the Mega Man games I admit, but out of the 4 or 5 I have, this has been my favorite. Admitedly, probably because I played it for days on end as a kid. Legend of Zelda: The Four Swords - Man, Nintendo letting Capcom make all these Zelda games sure are turning out great. I hope Minish Cap is as good as this (playing it now). Super Street Fighter II Turbo - Fei Long! Fei Long! Its all about Fei Long, the original Bruce Lee clone! Now, let's get more people responding this time so the thread doesn't die and I forget to put up a new company...::snif:: |
Resident Evil 4
Megaman III Devil May Cry III Super Street Alpha 3 Viewtiful Joe II Honerable Mentions:Onimusha III, Bionic Commando, Captain Commando, Project Justice, Breath of Fire(snes) capcom just has too many damn games damnit |
1. Devil May Cry (I haven't played this game in over a year but i still remember how to do the sword gun juggle.)
2. Megaman X5 (Mostly because you could play as Zero for the entire game. Only they cooler than ass-kicking robots are the ones that only use beam-sabers.) 3.Maximo and the Army of Zin (This game freaking rules. Maximo was good but this game takes everything good about the first game and takes out all the stuff that sucked. Fun and also challenging) 4.Breath of Fire II (My personal fav in the BOF series. This is a definte throw back to the days when final bosses were actually hard.) 5.Onimusha 3(Also a fun game. Plus it has Jean Reno. Score!) |
