How to Catch A Liar
Hiya folks. So I have good reason to believe that in the next few hours, say in about 4 or 5, someone is going to attempt to decieve me and my family for their own gain. As the protective brother to my "little" older sister, I need to make sure this doesn't happen. From your experiences, what are the best ways to tell when someone you don't know at all is lying to you? I really don't have a solid reason to distrust this guy, yet, but I am just going into this with a bad feeling and want to be prepared.

My first reaction to the situation was to tell you to grab a gun and up hold the honor of your last name.
But I know some people have a problem with violence and guns. So I would say just stay on your toes, ask questions, and watch his eyes. |
His tone, blinking rate, hesitation twords responses, and hand gestures are all subconsious responses to lying (sociology). Lookup a CIA/Special Agent website they acutally have a list of all the things people do when they are lying. Liars also tend to be very forceful if you say something contradictory to their falsehood.
According to my sociology class special government agents were the only ones who were able to tell if someone was lying to them at a decent accuracy. They are trained to tell somehow. Judges and policemen had an accuracy that was slightly worse than the average citizen. If you could expand on the situation it would probably help us to give you advice. As for a complete stranger, if they sound more honest or sincere than normal I tend not to trust them. Enthusiasm is typically something liars are full of. I know a guy who tried to get me to pay him $250 and he was full of it. They also quickly glance around. But hey this is all opinion, you really need someone with factual knowledge to help ya out. |
Looks up and left when hes answering something, making it up; up and right he's trying to remember something. Though I dunno the situation so if he is conning you this could be a long-con, in which case that won't help you... My rule of thumb, if you have a bad feeling about it, LISTEN TO IT! 9 times outta 10 your gut instict will tell you when something isn't right. If something just seems off to you, say you can't put your finger on it but you just feel like something isn't right, assume something isn't right. Call it intuition or that whole 'people have psycic abilities jsut don't know it' or whatever... Trust your gut, it's right most of the time..
Except when it tells you to get chinese food froma a mexican chef... then run... run like hell... |

Depends on which hand dominate he is. If he's right hand dominate, he uses the left side of his brain to think. If he's left hand dominate, he uses his right side to think. So, if he's right handed, you ask him a question and he looks up and to the left, then he's lying.
This is what I remember from researching this a few years ago, I might be wrong though. |
See if his eyes move around alot also if he looks down he is lying or dosent know the answer if you asked him a question.

We've always found that a constant barrage of questions, follow-up questions, follow-up-follow-up qestions, and just random inqueries. Liars are usually prepared up to a certain point, but if you just keep going more and more in-depth and then start throwing just totally random stuff in there, the chance they'll trip up gets better.

It's their left.. and yea, ask a lot of follow-ups, if you ever catch them in a lie call it out right then and there

Twitch a lot, finger a handgun (or a knife, if a gun isn't handy), and look him dead in the eyes. Make sure you get across the impression you're suspicious of him.
I'm not kidding -- at least, not in entirety. Did you take first aid training? Watch his neck-pulse. If you can see it, he may be lying. If you don't know where the pulse is, put your finger in the middle of your chin and draw it down your throat. Feel the tracheal bulge? On the sides of that bulge, in the middle, are some pulses. If he answers your questions with questions, he's trying to be deceptive. If he answers your simple questions with complicated answers, get more suspicious. EDIT: Seems I'm a little late. Still, maybe someone else can benefit from this. |
