Dave's Rant (of Bob & George)

Well, I don't know if anyone else has noticed this yet up at Bob & Geoge, but in today's blurb Dave compares his life to that of Brian & the people of Penny Arcade. Kinda fun rant, and I wouldn't mind hearing Brian's reactions.

Although, I can take a guess...

Nothing to say today. Wish the weekend wasn't already over. But back to work for another week, all the while waiting impatiently for the weekend again so I can waste away the days doing nothing again. And then I wonder what it would be like if I didn't have a job, if somehow the comic was enough to support me. I wonder what it must be like for Gabe and Tycho over at Penny Arcade or Brian at 8-Bit Theater, guys who apparently spend their days playing video games while their websites support them. I think it must be nice...
Quote:

...until I remember that such inactivity would surely drive me crazy. And I can't get into video games nearly enough to write reviews about them like Tycho. I mean, seriously, he's got to be playing them 26 hours a day, doesn't he? And they all seem like games that would require massive amounts of time playing.
Quote:

What's worse, if the comic was my sole means of financial support, how could I ever even think about quitting? I mean, Do people that subsist on their online comics really see themselves doing it forever? What is Brian going to do when he finishes the first Final Fantasy game's storyline? Will he risk the financial downfall and end the comic, possibly moving on to a new comic, or will he try to continue the comic with a completely original storyline? Or maybe he's just thinking that by the time he ends the comic, his writing career will have taken off.
Quote:

Additionally, unless the money was really good and more than I can possibly imagine it would be, wouldn't I constantly have to worry about making ends meet? With something as subjective as an online comic, I'm not sure I'd want to deal with the kind of pressure that would come from constantly trying to keep everyone happy, from advertisers to readers to community members, etc.
Quote:

Besides, if I made the comic more than just a very time-consuming hobby, if I actually had to deal with all that nonsense I imagine some other webcomic authors have to, it wouldn't allow me to slack off and put up what I consider sub-par comics like what I've been doing lately, right?

Personally, I blame it on The Sims 2.

:bmage: It makes every one wonder "why am I making these comics? For people who ask and look for every small plot hole that they can’t find answers to? I mean come on who cares if people are going to see that my comics are funny?” Like why is Iwillpress still making Foamy cartoons YET 50% out of 100% hates him and the other what ever % likes them.

:thief: Money, Fun, Money, Enjoyment, Money, Fandom, and…did I say Money?

:fighter: But ya I don’t really know my self :bmage: …so Brain stop playing warcraft and tell us What makes you tick?

[me] Useing these Icons are funny. And ya it makes you wounder about sprite comic makers about that huh?

Wow, I didn't know that I just sat back all day as money effortlessly appeared in my off shore bank accounts.

I love the perception a lot of webcomic authors, and perhaps readers, have of what it's like to go pro. Imagine, if you will, going to work only to find out the following things have changed:

You're now the only employee, but you have to do everyone's job. Also, your pay at the end of the week will be determined randomly based on the mean moods of a 100,000 strangers regarding one particular facet of one of the many jobs you do when most of them are convinced, secretly or openly, they could do better.

Also, you don't have insurance or job security.

Have fun!

...bam, I say. That's a big bam.
Seriously though...Nuklear age doesn't count as a means of income? I mean, didn't the book come first?

Sandrock 03-07-2005 05:04 PM

I read the arcives. Brain said how his book was found by business people that it would not sell. But his book on amazon.com was outselling Spider man a house hold name. So...I guess sort of yes around the early 400 or late 300 comics did the story and book went into selling.

That begs the questions, what will Brian do when 8-bit ends; and when can we expect another Nuklear Age?

Atomik Age is coming. It is a sequel technically, but not directly. Just that many of the same characters are involved and the setting is a few years later.

Anyways.

The problem is, BnG is inferior. :B At least in my eyes. And it doesn't automatically mean it, though it can be a strong indicator. If Dave would put more friggin time into his comic and not use the same 7 jokes in repeating story arcs, maybe you know, make a life and ajob out of it instead of spending maybe a grand total of an hour per strip, then he'd have a more legitimate basis for frustration.
