School for the bullied
http://www.jsonline.com/news/metro/mar05/307446.asp
I think the idea is good on paper, but it will prove to be less beneficial than they thought in the long run. It will make the current anti-social students even less social by putting them into an unrealistic environment, one where no one picks on anyone. Not that I don't think it'll continue in this new school, but those kids should learn to get used to it because once they're out, there will be no anti-bully universities or careers. I'm not asking anyone to change their lifestyles or sense of fashion, I'm just of the opinion that this school will offer four years of happiness, then a mean slap in the face. Quote:

 Yeah, going to a new school will sure teach THOSE bullies.
Yes, people are made fun of and teased. It's a fact of life. Hell, before I thinned out Junior year in High School, I was tortured. But I worked through it, and now I have good friends. Hell, I'm even more popular than some of the people that harrassed me. It's not about moving away from the people or trying to block out anything that will be harassing. It's about learning ways to deal with it and stop it. Hell, if a good punch to someone's gut (which is what I ended up doing), then it's what you do. |
Not only do I not think that this school will put an end to bullying, I also think that removing students from the atmosphere of a normal school is neccesarily a good thing. I was made fun of in High School. There was one kid who somehow managed to be in all my classes who made a point of singling me out and persecuting me. But I came out better for it.
I'm not saying bullying is a good thing, but those kids who are on the recieving end emerge stronger for having been put through it. High School doesn't last forever, and while those four years may seem terrible to you, they help shape who you are as a person. |
That'll never work, there will always be some jerk out there that will think they are better than everyone else or try to take advantage of people who're weaker in some sense than they are. It doesn't matter where you go, they will follow you, TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH!!! *cough*

I don't know about you, but after all of the bullying in high school, and still further in college...I'm out for blood.
I'm going to be damned if I'm going to be at the bottom of the social hierarchy. Oh well, if you ever, by some pure coincidence, catch hell by my hand, just know that it isn't personal! |
Throwing kids into this unrealistic situation will just make them weaker as a whole. They will grow up not being made fun of at all, then they will hit college, be tortured by the "normal" kids, then they'll crash and burn.
It's just not a good idea. That's all there is to it. Short-term happiness isn't neccisarily the best thing for a kid. |
I think this might be ok for SOME people. People who are physically disabled, people who are homosexual, people who suffer from mental trauma, etc. etc. I don't think anyone whose posted here yet is homosexual, physically disabled, or suffers from mental trauma. Let me tell you something: I've been picked on for normal reasons, and I've seen what happens to kids that come out openly. Being picked on normally is fine. You grow past it. You kick someone's ass. Whatever.
However, when you have a group of people spray painting faggot on your locker (repeatedly), beating you up, etc. etc. and the administration either can't or won't do dick, it's time that you get out. If you go someplace else and the same thing happens, what are you going to do? And yes, I'm speaking from experience. I saw all of this happen to a kid at my highschool when he came out. Normal bullying doesn't usually go that far. And, you know, MAYBE Tom is stronger for it. Or maybe Tom puts a gun in his mouth every night and thinks about pulling the trigger, because that's going a shit load further than anything should ever go. However, just taking anyone who doesn't feel like being picked on will just result in babying them for a little while and then kicking them into a harsh reality, like has been said. I don't see the problem with kicking THESE people out into a harsh reality, because in highschool you can't do a whole lot about discrimination based on sexual orientation, race, physical disabilities, or mental disabilities. In college, generally, there's a more 'open' air about at least a few of those things, and outside of college if people discriminate against you at work you are in the full legal right to sue the fuck out of your employer if they don't stop it... and there's no place else you have to go to deal with it. |

However, I don't believe there are that many people who have to deal with such a severe level of bullying, though your friend Tom does have my sympathies and my support. I also don't think this school was designed as a haven for people who feel like their personal well being is threatened at school. What you're describing needs to be dealt with by the police or the administration, not by this place. |

Also, we've all been approaching this from the point of view from someone that might go to these schools, but we've ignored the other perspective. The quote-unquote "normal" kids may well feel jealous of the "troubled" kids, feeling that they get special treatment. They may also just be ignorant that these people exist, meeting up with one of these kids in the future and not knowing what to do. If the world were perfect, it would be a great idea. On the other hand, if it were a perfect workld, the idea wouldn't be needed. It doesn't really matter, though, because this is a far from perfect world. This idea could work great, but I think it's far more likely to cause many more problems than it would solve. |
If they do do this, the bullied will bully the other bullied and thus the other bullied will become the bullied of the bullied who are occasionally bullied. But, seriously, I get bullied all the time but I don't care.
Some kids just gotta suck it up. Most kids who get bullied are nerds getting bullied by jocks, but in the long run these nerds will get better jobs than the jocks and make more money than them. Then the nerds can run down the jocks in their Ferarri while the jocks deliver some guy's pizza. It all evens out. |
