The Da Vinci Code
I'm about halfway through with it now, but so far it has reserved its spot in my best books ever collection, along side Nuklear Age, and The Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy series.
My favorite thing about the book has to be how the Church is portrayed. Instead of being the common Church (good guys) vs the heretics who don't believe in god (bad guys), it actually reverses the roles by painting the Church as a group that desires nothing more than to destroy the non-Christian religions (the most extreme example of this is Opus Dei.) Not to mention how it incorporates so much actual pagan religion into it, and how the Church over the years have made the pagan symbols become associated with evil. So what are your opinions on the book? |
It's really a fascinating book, but as churchy books spin a positive role, this one spins a negative role. It's fairly biased. Still, a lot of what is presented is accepted (if somewhat suppressed) and there is a vast amount of actual legitimate information in the book.
If it weren't so close to home and so well done, I doubt the religious community would have been so up in arms about it, even holding scientific conferences to debunk parts. That's my opinion. Anyways, I loved it. |
Question: In the supermarket where I work, there is a book called "Angels and Demons" (Oddly enough, a friend had made an RP by the same name; They were unrelated, though). It says on the cover:
Before there was the Da Vinci Code, the world was at the mercy of ANGELS AND DEMONS. So now I'm just dying to know what's inside that book... I'll have to pick it up Saturday... |
Angles and Demons was Brown's first book with Da Vinci Code character Langdon. with me so far? good. Anyways A and D is a much much much better book that the Code since the ending doesn't suck and just because I liked it much better...A and D has the negitive spin on the church some what that shiny refered to.
In conclusion buy and read A and D, Also you should by Brown's other book "Deception Point" it's a political conspiricy book that's a very good read. Until Next time, Go to out and buy those books!, Death by stabbing |
To be honest, I've always intended to read The DaVinci Code - I just never got around to it... and I know I'd like the style of the book; I read the first few chapters in a WalMart and liked it. Nonetheless, it might become one of those things I really should experience, but will probably never actually get around to it. Like the Lord of the Rings movies... never saw 'em.

Da Vinci code is good, but I agree that A & D is better. I didn't like the ending, or pacing of the Da Vinci Code. Also, I was disappointed that the secrets weren't ACTUALLY hidden in Da Vinci's works for real (Slight Angels and Demons spoiler)as they are in real sculptures in A & D. Also, the Da Vinci Code is a based in part on a book that was broven to be a hoax (His Blood, His Grail, I think it was...)

Yup, Angels and Demons was better than The DaVinci Code, but they were both great books. After you're done reading A&D, check out my thread over in arts and crafts labelled 'Ambigrams'. :-P

I really enjoyed Da Vinci Code; it raised some very interesting points and provided a good story without taking itself too seriously. I thought that the pacing of the book was good but I was severely disappointed in the ending it was just so anti-climactic especially after building up the story to two climaxes before that. I've got Angels and Demons and I'm looking forward to reading it as soon as I finish the book I'm reading now.
P.S. Death by Stabbing the quote in your sig is from Spaceballs. |
yeah it was a really good book. the problem I see with it is that too many people think its real. its fiction. That really was John or whoever in the last supper, Da Vinci was not the head of that secret organization, nor was there ever really a secret organization, some guy in the early 1900s made up it up. There was a really good special on the history channel recently that looked at a bunch of the claims in the book and ended up saying they were each most likely not true.
Also if you like this type of fiction dealing with historical church and jesus, try reading The Genesis Code |
It's a good read, but it DOES take itself seriously. The whole story has been debunked as as a hoax, mainly by Opus Dei. Boy, they were peeved.
