FF X-2 incest?

This has been bothering me, is Square actually forgeting who is who for their characters. In X-2, please don't hurt me for playing this it was a Christmas gift, Brother is well hot for Yuna. This is normally just annoying, but they are cousins. Rikku and Brother are siblings and their father is Cid. No big deal yet, but Yuna's uncle is Cid (on her mother's side) so Rikku and Brother are cousins with Yuna. Please don't tell me I am the only one bothered by this.

Well... in Massachusetts, it is legal to marry a first cousin...

TheBlindMime 03-14-2005 12:52 PM

That doesn't mean its right. And to put it simply Massachusetts is now on my list of disgusting places never to go, its right up there with all of the south.

and yes it bothered me too.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I too am bothered by it... I suppose my point was that some people in our fine state thought it important enough to put a law like that in the books - and I suppose some of the people at Square either didn't see a problem with it or was just a mere oversight.

Well Square is a big company so if it was done purposely I would think someone would try to change it. I'm just wondering if they just flat out don't care about if their games make sense anymore. Even thought X-2 isn't the most thought out of their games it still carries the name Final Fantasy and should be well made.

I thought that was odd myself - I just assumed I misunderstood the Rikku-Brother connection, that he was *like* family. Now that I think about it, it is very creepy and unnecassary - especially considering it was only done for humours sake.

Maybe the legal/moral view of sexual relations between first cousins is different on Japan from the West? I have no idea whether that is true or not, I'm just mentioning the possibility.

Also, its not like anything ever happens between Yuna and Brother, he just has a crush on her, and even in the West, its hardly a crime for someone to have a harmless crush on their hot cousin. Yeah, it IS a little weird, but I don't really think its a big deal either.

Doesn't Rikku scold him about hitting on Yuna for exactly the same reason, though? I've never played the game, but I seem to remember friends who have laughing about that.

Japanese sensibilities about some things are different than Westerners' -- some things that are taboo to us are totally hilarious to them. This is something you're always going to run into if you're into Japanese pop culture -- it's okay to find it gross, but it doesn't necessarily mean that the company is on the verge of total breakdown or becoming the next Sodom or whatever.

Edit: of course you can't Google the subject without running into what feels like an endless stream of "hooray for cousin-fucking" sites, but from what little useful information came up, it seems like Japan is just a lot more relaxed about first cousin marriage than we are, maybe even to the extent that it's not totally out of the norm for it to actually happen. Again, I'm not saying you shouldn't be grossed out by it, but at the same time, this kind of thing is something you're going to come across whenever you get into the pop culture of a society that's pretty radically different from your own in some ways.

Yeah, just look at Fire Emblem (And I mean the supports and the game in its entirety). Preferably the uncensored Japanese one. I can guarantee that you'll never be bothered by something like this again.

...

That was a very rude thing to say. I am from Texas and have family spreading all through-out Louisanna and Mississippi. I have never met an inbred person.

I blame it on the Jerry Springer show. They get the worst yahoo hill-billies they can find, and it makes the rest of us down south look bad. JEEZ!

On the up side, inbreeding keeps those who do practice it out of my gene pool.
