Berserk is the best anime of all time.

Discuss please.

GatoFiero 11-19-2003 02:05 PM

Never seen it, but...um no, I only know the name. i would counter and say that Vandread is the best anime of all time.

Jeice 11-19-2003 02:34 PM

I've seen some of it and will give it credit for being gory and freaky at the same time.

JohnCourage 11-19-2003 03:34 PM

not to rain...

Berzerk was cool in its first and second episode. after that it blew. end of story. the animation was capital "B" bad, and there wasn't anything new in the enither the action or the drama the entire way through. it moved too slowly to be an action anime, and was too gory to be a drama. if you want mideival fantasy anime, watch lodos war (the first set) trust me, it is just plane better

Devil Wet His Pants 11-19-2003 04:11 PM

...I hope you realize that for that remark you are now my sworn, mortal enemy JohnCourage.

"Berzerk was cool in its first and second episode. after that it blew. end of story."
Please explain where you feel the story went sour and why it sucked.

"the animation was capital "B" bad,"
No, it's an old anime. Also, it's artistic. The water color effects and such used match the style of the rest of the anime. Also, please elaborate on why it was capital "B" bad.

"and there wasn't anything new in the enither the action or the drama the entire way through"
You're right, nothing new happened at all. Except of course for *spoilers* the Gatsu, Caska, Griffith love triangle, Gatsu's leaving the Band of the Hawk, the introduction of Nosferatu Zodd, when Griffith kills the queen, when Gatsu assassinates Count Julius and his son, THE ENTIRE ENDING SEQUENCE THAT IS TO SPOILERIFIC TO POST IT, *end spoilers* but I digress...

"it moved too slowly to be an action anime"
Except there was a battle in nearly every episode...

"and was too gory to be a drama"
Actually, the gore goes so well with the drama in the series that it actually ADDS to it. If you don't like gore in your animes though, then you have picked the wrong form of entertainment...

"if you want mideival fantasy anime, watch lodos war (the first set) trust me, it is just plane better"
Actually, I own Lodoss War, and I my opinion still holds. So, while I appreciate your objectivity to my opinion. I would appreciate it if next time, you put more time and effort into your response.

Beserk is a great anime. I loved it. The best? Ehh.. I'm pretty sure Ninja Scroll and Hellsing (for those who have seen it) wins.

JohnCourage 11-19-2003 06:39 PM

sweet, i hope that your more than just talk on the mortal enemy bit. further, don't try to talk down to me, your not that good at it.

finally, as per your request: the story went south in a big hurry after episode 2. i covered that. the reason it went down is simple: the main character was flat as a board. i don't care what you read into his "brooding" silences, there wasn't anything there. except of course that he was secrely gay (its a real subtext with Griffin) and that his daddy hated him. *gasp* after the fight with the snake man, he could not support a plot

the animation was UNMISTAKABLY bad. look again at how very few things move in any given shot. this is so the production company can pay even less for the korean slave laborers. it ain't an artistic choice.

i'll give you the point about variety of plot archs. i was hasty on that one. its just that i didn't care because guts was so dull

battles do not make for good action sequences, no matter how many there are. n'uff said

i have nothing against gore in my entertainment, but if you think the violence was tastfull, well who am i to argue

hopefully i have given you enough to fuel your animosity for another day.

I have returned! Have at you JohnCourage!

"finally, as per your request: the story went south in a big hurry after episode 2. i covered that. the reason it went down is simple: the main character was flat as a board. i don't care what you read into his "brooding" silences, there wasn't anything there."
Except for his inner conflicts on every aspect of his life. From when *spoilers again* he lost to Griffith (the first time), whether he should join the Band of the Hawk after they just attacked him, his sense of loss after his fight with Zodd, his internal monologue during his fight with a hundred men, his ever changing opinion about Caska, when he killed poor Julius' son, *end of fricken' spoilers* and many other changes gave me an understanding of Gatsu's character. Which, to me, is complex despite the fact that he is a warrior that lives on the battlefield to kill fricken' everyone he comes across. However, I can understand your dislike for Berserk if you generally disliked Gatsu since this anime is all about him. Heck, if Cowboy Bebop had been mostly about Ed I would've shot myself in the head whenever it came on out of pure spite for that character. But since I enjoyed the character of Gatsu, I become enthralled with this anime. So yeah, I can sympathize with this point if you disliked Gatsu as a character. Moving on.

"except of course that he was secrely gay (its a real subtext with Griffin)"
Okay. No gayness. Seriously. Not gay. He admired Griffith for being a strong, straight-headed, charismatic leader in a world full of weakness under the ruling class. This is the same way that all of the members of the Band of the Hawk viewed him. No gayness. Okay? Plus, he slept with Caska. No gayness.

"and that his daddy hated him"
You're telling me you didn't like that? Is there nothing tragic about *Dang spoilers. Look if you've never seen this anime you should just stop reading this right now and leave this thread so nothing gets ruined* a little baby being found on a dead woman in the middle of a pile of dead bodies? Then said boy is adopted into a mercenary group by the leader and his wife, and when said wife dies said leader blames said boy for her death? So then said leader (this is fun) puts said boy through more stress than even said leader expects him to be able to endure? And even though said boy wants nothing more than to be accepted by said leader, said leader eventually snaps over his failed life and tries to kill said boy forcing him to kill said leader with his own blade? *End bloody spoilers* I likes me a good tragedy, and this anime is very tragic without going overboard.

"the animation was UNMISTAKABLY bad. look again at how very few things move in any given shot. this is so the production company can pay even less for the korean slave laborers. it ain't an artistic choice."
This anime is very old. Not only that but it was low budget. Some scenes are repeated and not as many things move as you'd like. But, I fail to see how this detracts from the story. The animation shines in the places that count and the picture still comes off as artistic. If someone watches old animes on Cartoon Network, they shouldn't have a problem with Berserk. I'm sorry if an over decade old anime can't compete with Cowboy Bebop in terms of animation. It's not like they had a choice.

"battles do not make for good action sequences, no matter how many there are. n'uff said"
Battles actually make for excellent action sequences when done right. (See: Braveheart, Lord of the Rings, Saving Private Ryan, etc.) And this anime had plenty of great battles. You've got Gatsu fighting off 100 men single-handedly so Caska can escape, you've got the battle to claim Ganon's castle (...How did I never notice that before) that ended in Gatsu killing Boscone after nearly losing his life, Gatsu's second duel with Griffith (which ended as shortly as it began), etc. So yeah, plenty of action to go around. Though I admit the main thing the story had going for it was its story. And if you didn't like Gatsu, though he is the baddest-of-asses, then you can say good-bye to that...

"i have nothing against gore in my entertainment, but if you think the violence was tastfull, well who am i to argue"
I wouldn't call it tasteful, I would call it shocking and tragic. Such as *Dangit, why does this story have to be so spoilerific?* Boscone's death, everytime Gatsu swings his sword (you can really feel for the poor bastard under that thing...), the ENTIRE ending sequence, Julius' son's death, etc. *Spoilers over* And I sure do likes me a good shocking tragedy.

So, um yeah. Touche, or some such...
