Sony = #$!@ed
http://www.japantoday.com/e/?content...at=4&id=332037
Now this does only pertain to the US markets, but damn, that's gonna hurt |
I always thought patent/copyrights were regulated on an international level.
|
nope, it's regulated by the country.
Sony should have been smart like microsoft and settled out of court, I think microsoft only had to pay $32 million, and still gets use of the product. however, sony chose to fight it and this is the result, though an appeal is likely to follow. I still bet they'll lose that though |
Whats interesting is that I've seen this story before, and what I've seen is that it has something to do with how the controller rumbles, but I've not seen any specifics as to what about the patent is being infringed. If its the idea of a shaking controller, well then Nintendo needs to sue these people or vice versa or something along those lines. Anyone got any URLs saying what exactly about the patent Sony violated?
|
Sony is hardly in trouble. I seem to recall earlier in both their lifespans, both Nintendo and Microsofts current consoles were hit with some major court orders. Remember the 100+ million settlement Nintendo payed to that stupid European union of companies?
|
Wait, did that article say they banned the import of playstation consoles to America? Why would that be copyright infringement? Immersion Corp. is a company that workd with touch force feedback technology. I sure as hell know that my playstation doesn't have a rumble feature. Well, unless it's about to explode.
|
those people deserve to die. money grubbing bastards. anyway, what do you suppose sony will give out with its consoles now? i always like the dualshocks...
also, to slime, they banned the consoles that have the dualshock controller with them, not all consoles. |
Kenryoku, I'd definitely say they're in trouble, the money itself wouldn't be too bad, but the halting of all the PS2 sales and 47 games, would.
And I wouldn't say that these people are money grubbing bastards, they have an extremely valid point, they did invent this technology and patent it. If you had created something and then someone made millions of dollars with it, wouldn't you want a fair cut. |
Well it's Sony. They have the Playstation, and if not they have TVs and DVD players. I mean, come on. It's not the end of the world for them.
|
From what little I read in an article in my local paper, it'll all likely get settled in the appeal. This just means that Sony can't produce any more units until said case happens. The problem, as I understand it, is that the US company showed Sony is designs for its own motion reaction controller, & Sony then went on to develop its own version. Had Sony never talked to those people, this wouldn't be an issue.
