Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy

The hitchikers guide to the galaxy is coming out May Sixth. What are some favorites about the books, and any updates on the movies.

I just finally saw the trailer for the movie and I'm now convinced that Disney goons asassinated Douglas Adams so they could fuck with his movie. This has the stink of Michael Eisner all over it...

Pros:
Warwick Davis as Marvin the Paranoid Android. The poor guy hasn't had much work lately, what with Lucas using Wookies instead of Ewoks in "Revenge of the Sith". Stephen Fry as the voice of the Book was a good choice, IMHO.

Cons:
"Mos Def" as Ford Prefect... come on, who's idea was this? "Lesse, pivotal character to the story, I know, let's use a washed-up rapper!"

Vogons... instead of hideous lumpy green things they're now apparently pigs... guess this is a plug for the new "Charlotte's Web" movie being released later this year...

And rather than put both of Zaphod's heads on his shoulders they've opted to put one under the other... because, you know, it's more "teh funny" that way.

I don't think I'll be going to see this movie.
The new version of Marvin. Apparently he's now the love child of R2-D2 and Twiggy from "Battlestar Galactica"

Do you know if they're just doing the first book, or if they're combining books?

Wow...soo many things wrong with this singular statement...lessee...
1) I don't care what your musical preferences are, a person can't be 'washed up' if he is still making good records.
2) Mos Def has more acting roles than albums. Wha?.
2a) He's been nominated for the Golden Globes, Emmy's and Image Awards. Guess he can somewhat act.
3) Because I know this is going to come up, it never specifies anywhere in the entire five book trilogy that Ford Prefect was white, only that he was disguised as an out-of-work English actor.

I might seem defensive, but I'm just corrective. Also, to correct something in the first post, the movie comes out April 29.

The only movie of his I've seen was The Italian Job. I really liked him in that.

The Zaphod thing is annoying me, but I don't know that it could have worked so well the other way. Anyway, I can live with that, and I can live with them screwing up the Vogons, but I'll be pissed off if they play up a romance between Trillian and Arthur. Now, it's been years since I've last read the first book, but as I recall, there was really nothing there beyond one or two hints that never went anywhere.

Edit: That said, the fact that Disney is doing it frightens me. It frightens me a lot.

Ford Prefect has never, ever, EVER been described in any of the books in any other way than "has ginger hair". Thats it. Thats all it. Douglas Adams never describes people, or really even described scenes... he lets the conversation and prose do it for him.

Well, yeah, he described the Vogons fairly well, but pigs could fit loosely into his book descriptions (the first movie took the loose description in a different way, is all).

Considering that this is one of my favorite book series, it makes me rather nervous, wondering how badly they'll screw it up.

Still, I'm planning to attend the premiere, probably in pajamas and sporting a large bath towel.

RickZarber 04-08-2005 09:41 PM

Ooh, good idea. I should wear my bathrobe...

Also, you guys are all too cynical. Who cares what little details have been changed. H2G2 has never exactly been consistent in its various incarnations... So it won't be like the book. So what? Neither was the video game! (A cookie to anyone who's played it - two cookies if you beat it!)

And sure, the Zaphod head thing is a little weird and different - but I think it's better than them sticking a CG head on his shoulder, and a far deal better than the animatronic one from the BBC series.

Also, the Disney angle doesn't matter one bit. They're distributing - big deal.

I am not afraid.

It's going to suck, it's going to rely on slapstick rather than be an intellectual satire of scifi stories and their warped complexities. It can only possibly be good is if we follow Mr Adam's solution for everything and simply go into our portable alternate dimension, go to the past and destroy Disney, go into the that dimension's portable alternate dimension, which features the movie in karmovision.
