Do you have heuristics or quick scan turned on? They tend to speed up scans a lot. If most of your files are media/archives rather than programs, the scan can speed along with heuristics.

Does the motherboard use AHCI? If so it needs to be disabled before installing XP and them re-enabled after installation is complete. XP doesn't play nice with AHCI during installs, but is fine...
