They're doing it, yeah, but with the support, teamwork, and more importantly supervision of Nintendo. So if the game winds up being the Unmetroid or whatever, to me the blame should fall squarely on the shoulders of the big N.
Anywho, second impressions are... eh. Other than potentially good voice acting this doesn't seem to... y'know. It's just a well drawn thing set to music. I can't base expectations on that. Show me some gameplay, or cutscenes, or even sample some of the music and I can dig it. Even screenshots would suffice. But this doesn't make me think "This game will rock!" or "This game will suck!". It makes me think "This game will... uh... exist. Yay."
