It's well known that most competitive scrabble players learn the spellings of the words in the scrabble dictionary but don't bother learning the meanings, mostly because they don't need to know the meaning. I've also heard that it's because it takes up memory space and they need all that memory space to remember to know how to spell a large quantity of words, but I don't know how medically sound that is.
So it's quite understandable that you don't actually need to know English to play scrabble, just the alphabet.
