I personally feel that his character shouldn't be touched until he comes back. Just out of respect for not handling other player's characters. (I suggested Matthias being in a coma as a result of the battle with Moera until Dante comes back as a viable instory reason for his absence.)

Well, putting him in a coma is interfering with him. Interfering pretty damn hard, to be honest. If you
really want to go with 'don't touch him', then we write him out of the story entirely and don't mention/include the character until dante gets back, and afterwards, dante decides what Matt did in his absence. I'd be okay with that.
But if we keep matt in the story (and I think we should), why not make him an NPC? AB can control him in a way that doesn't go against Dante's wishes, and, as a plus, Matt will actually be involved in the story. If we write him out, or put him in a coma, Matt's going to come back to a character who's been doing basically nothing, and getting back into it would be hard, to say the least. NPC works better.
And Drac, to preempt your question, if this were Impact, I would say the same thing. If I left suddenly, I'd want Impact to keep doing the shit I've been setting up, even if AB was writing him.
But yeah. This is all a bit long-term. Let's hope he gets back in time.
