Well, that's the thing about time loops: By their very nature, their focal point is going to come from nowhere because its existence keeps looping from the previous iteration. As long as the loop isn't broken, there's no explanation necessary, and if the loop is broken, then it was the real Zoe all along.
Edit: But yeah, I figure your explanation is entirely likely to be what happens. I wasn't suggesting Riff would actually do any of this - the comic just made me think of it.
