It mixes up the gameplay pretty regularly, it's grind free, the sidequests are fairly amusing diversions, the combat is a bit more fun during boss fights where you have to develop strategies and such, and the writing is oozing with PSX era charm. It looks great for a DS game and the music is good, too.
It's not the best jRPG ever, but if you're looking for a good time to spend on your DS it's looking to be a pretty fun ride.
I mean, I can't really say you're going to walk away from the experience talking it up as an awesome, incredible game, but I guess I don't really feel like every game needs to be.
