Escort missions are terrible because of AI issues. I'm not sure we'll ever reach the point where they don't seem terrible.

Now the fact that the girl you're escorting has "psychic powers" might make her not totally helpless. Like if she actually aided you somehow with like, pyrokinesis or something we might be cooking with gas.

Also Ashley in RE4 wasn't quite as annoying as other escort missions in other games because they had the foresight to just go ahead and have her basically invisibly "glued" to your backside. So it was annoying once in a great while but they saved it from being really annoying, which it would have been had they like, scripted some kind of AI into her where she wanders independently, probably into bear traps, zombies, and ravines.
