I decided I'd try one of those 'in media res' things.
So the cliff notes version of what's happened off-screen is the train's been kidnapping people to take them to the city. It's normally meant to take the souls of the departed to the underworld. It may or may not be a reference to various ghost trains in Final Fantasy.
Lia is investigating the city because she's a stickybeak. She found out about the train. She then somehow drew its notice.
She is also an idiot who jumps to conclusions, so she's assuming some sort of giant bug is the mastermind based on some off the cuff comparisons with the city and a hive. Don't be surprised when Lia keeps accusing various insects of being the mastermind or rambles about the winged menace behind everything.
Presently it's early morning. Lia is running downhill towards the city. The train is chasing her. Shiro has run up to ask what all this fuss is about. Arden and Cecil are on a collision course too. Roland is in a nice (not at all insectile) house on the edge of the city and has woken up and is trying to use harsh language on the train.
