I actually disagree with this particular sentiment because I think a couple more seasons of Firefly might've lessened the blow of losing said character.
Serenity felt like they were trying to rush several seasons worth of character development and storylines into a single movie, it might not have felt like such a failure in that endeavor if we spent several more seasons getting to know the characters before all hell broke loose. As is, we only spent one season with the Crew, so it felt way too soon to start killing folks off.
