Actually, Whedon has flat out said that if he'd been able to tell the story in a tv series then said character wouldn't have died. That was a movie thing. A movie thing that broke all our hearts.
Also Serenity's main sin isn't really trying to cram in character arcs, it's pushing aside actual characterisation and stuff that had already been established to make it easier for someone who hadn't seen the movie to understand. Like the stuff between Mal and Simon at the start was all way off. I just finished a firefly/serenity marathon with some friends and I was surprised just how different the movie felt. I'm glad we got some closure, but wow it would have been so much better on tv.
