Winamp is at 1% volume and still a little too loud. Supreme Commander is at 100% volume and is still too quiet. A number of other programs are pegged at minimum or maximum and are still unsatisfactory. Is there a way to help this?
I am running WinXP and the sound controller is Realtech HD Audio. |

Some things are just crap like that. If it helps, you should adjust your basic sound settings by double-clicking your tray icon and sliding the Wave, SW Synth, and CD Player bars to appropriate levels. You may also have MIDI if you have an appropriate device for it.

I mean, I am on XP and everything comes out of my speakers at relatively the same levels (I'm sure this statement is seen by audiophiles as an invitation for debate; lolololmyearsarebetterthanyours, etc. Let's do it!). I'd be curious if you had some kind of volume equalization that was setting different levels for different programs. If you set your digital audio with Windows's built in audio slider to 75%, say, then programs set to 100% internally should all approach that 75% threshold. Does that make any sense? It sounds as if your OS is not setting a blanket threshold, resulting in your applications doing whatever they want. I've not heard of something like this, so I can't offer much advice via the Intartubes. This would be a really neat problem to see first hand and play around with settings to see what caused what effects, etc. I'm intrigued!

That's why I suggested doing the output levels individually. It sounds like he's using several different programs, which may use different devices.

I'm with synk. This is actually really fun to think about.
In any event, I also have the Realtek HD device. Play around in the control panel > mixer settings, and you'll be able to adjust individual types of output as well as the output produced by different audio ports. Fiddle around until you find something that works.
