Default RAID 1 and Upgrading HDDs

My current desktop has a 500GB RAID 1 array, and I was wondering, how would I go about upgrading the component drives without data loss? Is it possible to stick a larger drive in the slave position, let the master copy over, and then put the larger drive in the master position with a second larger drive in the slave?

Edit: Wow, I just realized that I used the terms "master" and "slave" completely unintelligibly. It seems that even attempting something like this would be over my head, so I suppose this thread should be ignored.

Edit 2: Oh, this is cool... I found this .pdf which describes exactly what I'm looking to do. Search for "increase" and it will take you right to the relevant information.
