Canada is banning flavored cigarettes to stop youths from smoking. It's totally gonna work. Just like stuffing them behind a curtain did. And jacking up the prices. Those all stopped us from smoking, every one of us. Yup, don't see how this could fail. ...So yeah, working in a convenience store gives me a schedule of what days we have to pull down what smokes, but as a whole, flavored cigarettes are circling the drain in Canada. Which sucks, 'cause I smoke Captain Black Sweets. |

Let's be fair, banning them isn't going to cause anyone to quit. On the other hand, there's not a damn reason the things should be flavored other than to try to attract new, and in general young, smokers. Kids are already bombarded with a "cigarettes = cool" maelstrom of ads. "Smoke Marlboros! It'll make you into an awesome cowboy! Now in tutti fruity!" "Hey, cowboys are awesome, and I LOVE tutti fruity! Now to get someone of legal age to buy them so I can join in being cool!" You get the idea. Kids start early these days, and while only having shit-flavored cigarettes certainly isn't going to stop them, it at least removes some of the incentive.

On the other hand, they've been marketing cigarettes to kids since pretty much forever. Until Joe Camel was killed, at least one study showed more kids recognized him than the president. After said event, it never stopped so much as just got more sneaky. The "for adults only" bit is just as or more alluring to kids, because then smoking makes them adults or rebels, and either one is "cool."

I think flavored cigarettes were banned in the US not too long ago. It was part of a long list of anti-tobacco measures passed not long after Obama got into office.

These two things do not coincide.
But I'm personally all for the banning of any and all cigarettes so kudos to Canada.

I guess they lure kids to start smoking the same way that flavored condoms lure kids to have sex with flavored condoms. Banana? Awesome! Last edited by Seil; 04-05-2010 at 12:27 AM. |
