From Quest Cooperation, Tactics Ogre: Let us Cling Together is the second Ogre game, taking a turn in game play from their previous hit, Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen. Tactics Ogre is, surprisingly, a tactical RPG. You control multiple characters on an isometric field to fight multiple enemies.

If you are a fan of Queen, you may have noticed that both Ogre games are titled after Queen songs. This is because the lead designer, Yasumi Matsuno, was a Queen fan. None of the following Ogre series games use a Queen song for their title, because after Tactics Ogre several of Quest's key members, including Matsuno, moved to Square to create Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story. Quest Corporation only made four games, two developed by other companies, before being fully bought by Square.

But onto the game. I'm playing the Playstation version of Tactics Ogre.

Like every other era.

Iron Age, that's the best one.

This would make more of an impact had I played Ogre Battle first.

Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen was Episode V. Ogre Battle 64 became Episode VI. No other episodes have been made, though two side-story games were. It's kinda like Star Wars, starting half-way in. Hopefully the prequels are better.

The loading screen, figured I'd show it once. Plain, with our main character walking in the bottom. Here's a close up of him.

Starting

Onto the game.

We'll skip the official tutorial, and I'll just key you about game mechanics when it comes up.

Need a name. Your first decision. If you care, the default name is Denim.

The birthday has no effect, but here is a list of the months, so pick one.
God
Earth
Water
Shadow
White
Flame
Wind
Gold
Thunder
Dark
Sea
Black
Twin
Fire
Light

There are three more with the same options, so I'll just show them once.

You have a list of twelve things, and one by one you offer them to the four gods as a prayer, offering, and vow. These affect the main character's starting attributes, with each choice adding, subtracting, or not affecting the base attributes. If you always pick left then right, you won't change anything.

This can get annoying to vote because all the options, so I'll probably just pick ones, but if you want to do it in this format

WP: Item (Stands for Wind Pray: List choice)
WO: Item (Wind Offer: list choice)
WV: Item (Wind Vow: choice)
FP: Item (Fire Pray: choice)
etc, etc

Or just vote for all right options from the top, then all left. Or some other summary vote. Or do nothing and I'll just pick.

This picks the main character's element. This is the most important choice.

There are four elements in this game if you hadn't noticed: Wind, Fire, Earth, and Water. Elements of opposite attribute do extra damage to each other; this includes the element of a spell, the elements of two people physically hitting each other, and the elements of weapons. When two forces are the same element, damage is reduced. Fire and Water are opposite, as are Wind and Earth. Characters get bonuses for using spells or weapons of their element. Also, characters with Wind or Water do better during stormy weather, while Fire and Earth do better in clear weather. Fire tends to be the more common enemy element.

Pick an element.
