I was at lunch talking with a few of my buddies the other day and the topic turned to old games. I mentioned Myth and no one had heard of it, which is a shame, really.
Back before Bungie's Halo days they were already turning out kickass games with astonishing regularity. Myth was the first game I ever played with a fully realized physics system, and I don't think I've played any other strategy games where as much care was taken modeling the individual units and projectiles (maybe the Total War series). I mean, look at this shit. The dead guy's sword flies over a damn hill and hits a wounded guy with enough force to kill him! The other thing I loved about it was its story and tone. All your mission briefings come in the form of the journal entries of a nameless soldier fighting a losing war to keep the last major city in the world from being destroyed by a legion of undead led by generals known as the Fallen Lords. Things briefly get better, then there's twenty levels of "and then it got worse". Alric, who by all rights should be the main character, is only in three or so levels. However, he's badass enough that even reduced to being an escourt mission, he redeems himself epically (@7:50 or so in the vid). Anyway, am I all alone in my love for this game, or has someone else heard of it too? [/gush] Edit: Dammit, just now I noticed the typo in the thread title. Can I get a mod to add an extra 'p' into "apreciation" since I can't seem to figure out how to do it? Last edited by Gregness; 01-23-2010 at 08:53 PM. Reason: Edit to add the journal video |
