I'm rather disappointed by TDK's absence from the Best Picture nominations. This was another big chance for the Academy to break their mold which has almost become an unintentional self-parody, but lolno.
And while I totally love Wall-E, I was never exactly wowed by the screenplay. What with the main characters never talking and all. |

Didn't I see that movie when it was the Blair Witch Project?
EDIT: And avoid it when it was BWP 2? EDIT AGAIN: And avoid it at least once a week on Sci-Fi when it's Ghost Hunters?

Or approaching from the editing/cinematography angle, when it was Uncle Bernie Goes To Six Flags And Has The Camcorder On The Entire Time.
EDIT for content: Mickey Rourke seems to have been really good in The Wrestler. Last edited by Meister; 01-22-2009 at 03:23 PM. |

I almost forgot to rage over the absence of "Let the Right One In" from the foreign films. Either there were a shit load seriously amazing foreign films in 2008, or Let the Right One In got completely shafted.

Honestly, I could accept that The Curious Case of Forrest Gump, Milk (not bad for a biopic), and Slumdog Mehllionaire were locks for Best Picture nods, since it's hard to hate them with any meaningful sense of malice (I think Slumdog is the most overrated film of the year, but I a sable to see it twice without hating myself). However, The Fucking Reader? You had like thirty Holocaust movies to choose from, and even another Kate Winslet movie to choose from, and you choose, as Slate so succinctly put it, "Boohoo, I Bonked an Illiterate Nazi" over the Wrestler, let alone WALL-E or Dark Knight? I kind of want it to be an elaborate in-joke that get's unveiled during the ceremony, acknowledging how much all the old geezers <3333 SERIOUS BUSINESS HOLOCAUST MOVIES SERIOUSLY.
Also, I almost literally vomited in my mouth when I read the three nominees for Best Song.

Wait what The Reader? Aw bollocks. I couldn't stand that book, mainly because, well, it's "Boohoo, I Bonked an Illiterate Nazi" but also for me especially because I read it in school. I was so glad to have something in front of me that wasn't bloody Holocaust literature again and 50 pages in, Bernhard Schlink jumps out from behind a bush and goes, haha, gotcha!
Whatever, it's just the Academy Awards, nothing that actually measures a film's quality or anything. |
