Star Trek

I have been a Trek fan for years. The upcoming movie, Star Trek (or "When Kirk met Spock"), looks like it could be a very good one. What are your opinions about this film? Could it revive a franchise that was severely crippled by Nemesis?

I think it looks pretty interesting, but it doesn't really feel like Star Trek from what I've seen.
Star Trek, to me at least, has always been more about the political stuff than action scenes.

I'm excited, and I don't think there's anything wrong with rebooting the old series.

I'm a little wary of them rewriting Trek history as far as big stuff... like writing the other series out of exsistence somehow or something like that. I'm concerned becuase I haven't heard that Berman or Bragda is involved (much as I loathe their work with Enterprise & Nemesis, they are as close to the franchise as any living person besides the actors and I think their input is crucial to respecting it's history) and I don't know how they're going to make a new franchise out of it by starting with a film... but I think it could certainly be the thing the breathes new life into Star Trek if its good, plain and simple.

I don't know, from the previews I've seen it give Star Trek more of a Smallville feel to me. I've already had friends who are much more into the fandom than I carry on about all the inconsistencies the preview alone causes in the cosmic timeline of the show. Frankly I'm going to see it in hopes of seeing a good Sci Fi movie this year. I was never really impressed with the ship designs in Star Trek over other big space productions but I'm willing to give it a shot.

Who would have thought Stargate would spawn a decade of shows and branch into three different series? I'm sure they set the timeline sufficiently to give them plenty of wiggle room to work with for a few years or so.

I am going to go see it because I want to see a good movie but I'm not thinking of it as Star Trek. In my mind it is something entirely new that borrows an old name. Star Trek was always about hardcore Sci-Fi which is what the fans loved but also a part of the reason the show eventually died. J.J. Abrams has already said that he wants to remake Star Trek into something new and exciting(read: younger characters, sex, and action).

Also I like Nemesis. It is my favorite ST:TNG movie.

The trailers and previews I have seen look spectacular, but it's tough seeing Sylar as Spock and Kumar as Sulu.

Very much agreed. Every time I see a preview, I expect Spock to make a crack about "mind melds" and then cut someone's head open.

And I guess since I don't watch Heroes I have no preconceptions about this guy playing Spock... he looks alright for the role.

I haven't had much contact or concern for the Star Trek universe, but just from what I've read and talked about with POS I'm already a little bit bile-choked.
