So. . . I'm new around here. Obviously. Looking forward to becoming a part of the NuklearPower community. Or hope to
![]() I run a small (super so) video game site, http://www.jenito.com, and just completed an 8-Bit Theater Fan Game. I don't claim to have any of the talent Brian does, so bear that in mind when playing. If you care for a direct link to the game, http://www.jenito.com/8bit/index.php! Can't wait to get involved with everyone here at NuklearPower! |

The good: For what it is it's executed fairly decently. Some of the visual elements work surprisingly well.
The bad: Very basic idea with little to sell it other than 8-Bit. Using the same thing to move around as I use to fire fireballs is a very bad idea. No left-right key movement? Background could use work. That said, it'd be interesting to see a more fleshed out 8-Bit fan game. A fanfic of a fanfic, basically. You've at least gone to the effort to learn some basics, so there's definitely the possibility of you getting better over time, and I advise you to keep it up.

I thought this would be awful, but its merely flawed.
Pretty much just if you didn't attack and walk with the same button, it would actually be kinda fun. Implement arrow keys and I'd totally play this. |

Whenever I see stuff like this, I think, "If I was less lazy and more smarterer I might actually want to make an 8-Bit point-and-click."

Thanks alot for the feedback! Glad you were able to enjoy some. Did either of you get to the Thief part of the game? There is more after killing 500 people in Black Mage's shootout in the village.
Hrm. . . I actually originally intended to just use the keyboard for all controls, but then switched to mouse because I thought it might be more convenient. Looks like I should have stuck with the original plan. It wouldn't be hard to add keyboard movement, not hard at all. With the current scheme where Spacebar makes you fly I'm wondering if, say, Z and C or S and F may make better keys for moving left and right. Using the arrow keys whilst trying to reach over to the Spacebar could lead to some interesting hand contortions. If I get some time this weekend I'd like to play with it and try to make the changes. |

I'd say include both arrow key and ASDF movement controls. Keep the mouse for the shooting, but make shooting the first level of fireball something you can fire off instantly with a click, instead of having to hold the mouse button for a second.

As someone used to the QWERTZ keyboard layout I say never map y or z to anything. Always bugs me. Oddly, though, it works for Robot Unicorn Attack.
There's also AZERTY and others, by the way, but I don't care about sad fuckers with AZERTY. So, as for controls, what NonCon said pretty much. A mouse keyboard combo comes pretty natural for that kind of game.
