Nintendo President Satoru Iwata Dies At 55

There hasn't been any real details released as yet, but the cause of death was complications due to a bile duct growth that had been impacting his health. He was 55.

This is easily the biggest bummer of the month for me. Iwata was an absolute legend.

He completely re-coded Earthbound so that it could be released finally, He was responsible for the compression algorithms that allowed Gold/Silver to have, essentially, two games, he is responsible for Balloon Fighter and contributions to Kirby, single-handedly ported the battle system from the pokemon gameboy games to the N64 for stadium, is responsible for the existence of Super Smash Brothers, As PRESIDENT helped in the final crunch on melee to program so it could release on time, took sole responsibility for the poor launches of the 3DS and WiiU and gave himself a 50% pay cut to avoid having to lay off workers to make up for those. He gave us Reggie, gave insight to secretive workings of the company through Iwata Asks and was generally the only person I would ever say has lead a company that I felt actually cared about what every person thought about their work.
