Sony Reveals A New PlayStation Vita Model, Thinner and lighter, and with built in memory.
by Colin Moriarty SEPTEMBER 8, 2013

Today at Sony Japans pre-TGS press conference, the company revealed that it will be releasing an all-new model of PlayStation Vita.

Screen Shot 2013-09-08 at 11.58.38 PM

This model was made to be a more casual and easier to use model of PS Vita, one thats thinner, lighter, and that comes in different colors. Its 20 percent thinner and 15 percent lighter than the standard Vita model, and is more affordable, packing a 5 LCD display in lieu of an OLED screen. Battery life has been increased by an hour, as well.

Interestingly, it also has built-in storage, albeit only a single gigs worth.

newpsvita_01

Sony also revealed an all-new memory card for PS Vita, one that allows for up to 64 GB of storage.

This new model of PS Vita will be available in all six colors (some new, some old) on October 10th in Japan for 18,980 Yen (or about $190). Its unclear if and when this model will be made available in the west.
Very nice looking machine, but I'm curious about rather or not the analog has been improved (probably not). Might just wait a bit longer and get the slim when it comes out here in a few months. Because we all knew it was coming.

But this next thing however is quite the surprise. Ready?

Sony has announced a Vita that can be hooked up to your TV!?

Sony Reveals New Hardware: PS Vita TV
Play your Vita games on the big screen.
by Colin Moriarty SEPTEMBER 9, 2013

Sony revealed a ton of stuff tonight at its pre-TGS press conference, but perhaps the biggest surprise (well, other than a PS Vita redesign) was the unveiling of an all-new piece of Vita-related hardware. Its called PS Vita TV, and it lets you play Vita games on your television... and do a bunch of other stuff, too.

psvitatv

PS Vita TV is a tiny piece of hardware. Its about as big as a deck of cards, measuring 6cm by 10cm. Its the smallest PlayStation hardware ever.

The idea of PS Vita TV is to let you play Vita games on the big screen using a DualShock 3 controller, but theres actually more to it than that. While PS Vita TV has a card slot for Vita games, and accepts Vita memory cards, it will also let you use video streaming services (such as Hulu) and more. It will even let you play your PlayStation 4 via Remote Play with DualShock 4; this functionality will come later via system update.

psvitatv2

It will also let you play PSone Classics and PSP games through it, again using the DualShock 3. And it will connect to PlayStation 4 so that you can play Vita games through PS4, as well.

PS Vita TV launches in Japan on November 14th, and will cost 9,480 Yen ($95). A special verison of it, packing an 8 gig Vita memory card and a DualShock 3 controller, will cost 14,980 ($150). It sounds like it will eventually be released in the west, though a specific release date (as well as pricing information) is still unknown.
So yeah, it's like Sony's version of the Super Gameboy for the SNES. Only it's a stand-alone device that hooks up to your TV and Uses the Dual Shock 3 and 4 remotes. And it's a lot cheaper then the Vita. And plays PSP, PSONE Classics, and PSVITA games. (aww no PS2 Classics support...)

I think this was done to help get more devs to support the Vita. But on the other hand. It kinda kills the point of getting a Vita... Unless you're doing it for the Gamepad feature that the PS4 has (works kind of like the WiiU's Gamepad), or for portability.

All that aside the Vita might be ready to start making that come back soon.

Between a Vita, a Vita TV and a PS4 you can play PS4, Vita, PSP, PS2, PS3(the latter two with Gaikai) and PSX games on either of two TVs(you can set the Vita TV and PS4 in different rooms and stream between them I believe, so if one room is being used you can access everything from the other room on the free device) or portably (cause the Vita obviously does everything the TV does including streaming PS4 games remotely). It's a seriously comprehensive play anything on any Sony machine ever whenever and wherever you want if you live somewhere with high speed internet.

So Japan, South Korea, and Google Fibre areas basically if you want the "wherever" above to include outside of your house. The in house stuff is seriously pretty cool though.

also a single player Phantasy Star for the Vita got announced. Which is seriously

Default I asked on twitter but no one I know has one

I've been side-eyeing a vita for a while now (Ys Celceta!) so maybe this'll drop the price of the first edition second-hand (they work second-hand, right?). The Vita TV looks like a pretty smart device, actually, but I'd probably want a handheld still.

Can anyone with a Vita right now tell me if the ENTIRE PSP catalogue is available on there or just Select Titles? What about region locking, can I buy US/JP PSP and Vita games? I skipped owning a PSP altogether so the backwards compatibility of the Vita would be the decider.

According to Wiki... "The device is also backwards compatible with most PlayStation Portable downloadable titles, "PSone Classics" downloadable titles, PlayStation minis, PlayStation Mobile games, and videos from the PlayStation Store."

I note it does not say physical-disk titles.

Vita has no UMD slot, it either runs digital games bought via PSN or Vita game cards, so no, it doesn't support physical PSP games. A lot of PSOne and PSP games are on PSN, but not all of them.

Vita also has no region locking, techncially - I bought a vita last week and I signed up for a Brazilian PSN account which is shit ( missing games, ludicrous prices ) - but users from NA/EU/AU/JP shouldn't worry about it.

Vita works second hand, they just lock their memory cards to an account, so you have to format them to sell ( which you'd do anyway? ).

I have big hands.

I went from a DSlite to a PSP to a Vita.

The DSlite feels tiny, the PSP feels alright but has some room for improvement with the positioning of the dpad and the analog stick and the Vita is pretty great about it.

It's not as good as a dualshock or a xbox360 controller or what have you, but it's far better than the DSlite/DSi and the 3DS.

Edit: So, I'm curious, who here also has a Vita?

I'd get one of these if it was pretty cheap because I'd like to play some Vita stuff but not really interested in it as a portable.
