Default Bells Review: Tatsunoko Vs Capcom!

I've finally been able to get my hands on some imports, and decide to share the opinion in case some of you consider to import these... so let's go!

TATSUNOKO VS CAPCOM - Japanese Only - December/2008

HOW TO

To get the game to play, you just need an SD Card, 20 minutes and google. I wont go into that, but it's not something you will have trouble finding. I Played this on a 3.1 NTSC-U Wii console and it ran smooth all the time.

OVERALL

The game "feels" very easy and "noob friendly", it has that arcade feel, but at the same time, hardcore fighters might find satisfaction only when tipping the Difficulty level all the way up... except for the last boss. The last boss is a bitch. and the learning curve is steep on the last stage, because the boss has a lot of Cheap shots at you (think Abyss from MvsC2 but worse), the presentation is polished and spot on. The sound is good but a bit "meh". The gameplay is flashy, fast and dosent require much learning.

Graphics and animation

The animation is fluid and great looking, characters seem alive and colorfull. During gameplay, all characters seem pretty, shiny and curvy. Up close, though, some of them look blocky and a bit featureless (Roll, Morrigan) while others look more polished (Alex, Batsu). But they all animate great, look colorfull and vivid.

The visuals for your special attacks look fantastic (Ryu's Hadouken never looked better!) and your "ultimates" look just as awesome and huge (Watching Karas do his special is a beauty to behold)

The stages all look great, i loved most of them. They are full of life. Ar quite colorfull and really completes the visual of the game.

The opening video is fantastic, and the artwork for the characters is very well done. Each character has a "micro-ending" that is fully animated, and it gives you a lot of replayability so you can unlock all of these to buy them at the shop, because they are all well done.

Sound

Sound is a bit Lacking. Maybe it was my TV set, maybe it was the fack that i was playing an import... but voices and music seemed to blur and mesh in the background with very little grasping your attention.

When you switch characters, their "theme" music starts playin. That's a nice touch! and it does work. Making the battles seem more "epic" in a way. Also, some of these tunes are really great (Karas, Roll and Chun-li for instance). But these are hardly songs you will remember. And the voices, although quite audible, are a tad too low.

Gameplay

Basic Controls. I Used a Wiimote and Nunchuck combo (i dont have a classic controler). + is the pause button (and Continue button)

Wiimote: A Attacks. B is Special Attack (hold the nunchuk in some direction to change the attack or special) D pad does nothing. Waggle to unleash your Ultimate.

Nunchuck: C: Buddy attack. Z: Change character. Analog: Move character

It's pretty simple, and actually, a bit too simple. But it works. It's very "pick up and play"

Chaining combos isnt hard at all, and within 15 minutes i was pulling 7 hit combos with Ryu with little to no effort. Also, Most "shoryuken-like" (Down + B usually) attacks can be exploited to drain your opponent of health pretty quickly and then, linked to a Ultimate with a simple waggle.

You can also unleash Ultimate attacks using A+B, or A+B+ A direction with the analog (unleash different Ultimates by doing so) to use a team combo, just Press and hold and Partner Button while using your Ultimate attack and they will tag in.

PLAYING

Like i said before, you can breeze trough the Arcade mode in the "Normal" difficulty without much effort, except for the last boss who can just cheap your way into a Game Over Screen over his 3 Forms (The second and last ones being the to Worst). But there is challenge to be had, as you face the 8 Battles.

Playing the game, specially if you ramp the difficulty up, will be more of a "strategy + special attacks" comination as you try to out-damage the CPU. The game tends to boil down to a "Ultimate Attacks fest" where it's not hard for you to unleash 6-7 of these before the match is over (although you can raise the overall damage too) but there is a lot of fun into these battles and there is a learning curve that Hardcore Arcade gamers will enjoy. The selection of characters is great. Providing a large array of options, and each characters feels pretty unique.

IMPORT OR NOT?

If you really like the Versus series, theses characters, and really want a good fighter on the Wii besides Smash Bros... then it's worth to import this title. It's big, fun, pretty and long lasting.

But if you're looking for a more "solid" figthing game, or just dosent know that much about the roster of this game, you should save your cash. TatvsCap has it's issues and it works best for fans of the characters.

You can get it at Playasia for $68

I just have two words to say regarding TatsuCap: Fuck Karas

Okay, not really. I had a lot of fun with the game, even if I have to agree that the audio leaves a lot to be desired despite the amazing Tatsunoko compositions. I just wish there were more people to play with around.

Also, Wiimote alone beats Wiimote + Nunchuk in this game.

I hope that Megaman Volnutt's appearance in this game means that getting another Legends game isn't out of the realm of possibility.

It's what I was hoping for when I saw Trigger's appearance, yes.

The selection's pretty good, the ending animations are awesome, go Yatterman.

Roll is the most awesome character in my book, as she's hard to hit...and one of her specials HEALS HER.

Coupled with the fact that "baroque mode" is a new ability for this VS game that takes whatever redbar (regenerating) health you have left after an attack and consumes it for improving the damage and length of your combos, means that she could get an asskicking, turn it into a super combo of pure pain...then heal herself so she could do it again!

That and Yami, the giant robot from Lost Planet and the other giant robot can't even touch her.

Her Megaman-esque robot master death is awesome too. And somewhat sad.

Who wants to see Roll get hurt? SHE'S A DELICATE FLOWER, PEOPLE!

It's why she succumbed to the magnetic field in Super Adventure Rockman first! Also, it was because she was a girl, but that's just Dr. Light's chauvinism.

If anyone's wondering these are the latest Arcadia Top 10 rankings. Arcadia (Japanese arcade magazine) rank arcade games in Japan by popularity.

1) Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion / 鉄拳6 BLOODLINE REBELLION - 341.2
2) BlazBlue / ブレイブルー - 286.3
3) Gundam VS. / 機動戦士ガンダム ガンダムVS.ガンダム - 258.3
4) Melty Blood Actress Again - 207.2
5) Street Fighter IV - 164.7
6) Virtua Fighter 5 R - 126.9
7) Arcana Heart 2: Sugoi / すっごい!アルカナハート2 ~転校生 あかねとなずな~ - 101.4
8) Tatsunoko VS. Capcom: Cross Generation of Heroes - 96.3
9) Guilty Gear XX ^Core - 87.4
10) DeathSmiles - Mega Black Label / デススマイルズ MBL - 60.2

TvC is just hanging on there. it's not as popular in Japan as some of you might think sadly. Hopefully that won't stop a sequel being made.

Well... it is older than those games higher up the chart... no??

But it really dosent deserve the top spots just yet... although, a sequel would be great, because there is room for improvement (i wish the roster was a tad bigger though... maybe a sequel could solve that)

I really like these 3d fighters that play like 2d Fighters, and c'mon... i just want "Capcom Vs Jump" so i can Die happy!!!

After how badly it bombed? No, no chance of it.

Interestingly enough, Tatsunoko just announced recently they are going to make an anime featuring Tatsunoko and Marvel characters. Talk about irony or something.
