Computer won't go into standby

So my computer is getting worse I think. Right now, when I select the Stand By button in the Shut Down box, it refuses to go into stand by mode, or anything else for that matter. The computer itself works fine, well as fine as I am willing to accept these days, but it refuses to shut down, sleep or go into stand by.

Is there a good way to remedy this?

I think it would really depend on the problem. A list of all issues might help. It could be anything from viruses to a dying power supply with just that info.
