The kid's was to "report to stage by B lunch and stay until end of B lunch"?

What the hell, did they punish him by making him do bad stand-up routines?

Nah, some schools just have a stage in their cafeteria, and detention is sitting on the edge of it till lunch ends. I've been in three schools that did that, so I'm pretty sure it's a common practice >.>

Also, SOOOOOOO tempted to send an angry email to the teacher about this detention "stifling the creative process of a middle school student during an awkward phase of their life, where social interactions help them understand their place in the world" or some shit like that.

Yes, those situations happened a lot in the prop-bed behind the stage in the auditorium of my old High School if rumors and shameless self assertions were to be believed.
