So English Dungeon Fighter is back.

I wasn't expecting that, anyway. They're running an open alpha for a global server that is picking up where Nexon NA left off. This time it's being run by Neople, the creators, so hopefully it won't be mishandled as bad (although the total dearth of promotion building up to this, to the point that everyone thought it was a hoax, is not inspiring my faith). It looks like you need a Facebook account to get into the alpha.

Lemme say, Dungeon Fighter is a fantastic f2p game, and you're doing yourself a favour if you try it out. It's fun to play, it's got an engaging plot with interesting characters, and a really interesting setting. The art and sprite graphics are also pretty phenomenal, and the cash shop stuff basically only applies to you as much as you want it to. Like okay, part of the backstory of this world is that the apocalypse happened and wizards detached New York from the rest of the world and now it's some kind of pandimensional hub for super powered jerks who are invading the PC's world which is actually two worlds with a tower in between them and the lower world's sky is the upper world's ocean. This game has traditional and kung fu fantasy, high tech sci fi, cowboys, that tank from Ghost in the Shell, alligator train pirates, post apocalyptic fantasy, martial arts tournaments, and also time travel. Plus you fight the Pied Piper of Hamelin at one point.

You can kill Leonardo the Ninja Turtle and wear his corpse as a suit with blue buttons for teddy-bear eyes. This is an actual thing that happens in Dungeon Fighter.

I'll be having some free time for the next weeks which is the perfect opportunity to get sucked into some F2P MMO.

They do have a pretty weird download method, you gotta download their plugin, restart your browser, go back to the website and then you get their client to download the actual game. Also the Facebook login but this won't be the first time I had to use it to get some games

Yeah, I don't know what's up with all that; most people figure they'll have a better method set up for the actual release. For my part, I have Chinese Dungeon Fighter which is like ten million updates ahead of DFOG, so I'll probably wait for the full release. It's a game that really lends itself to solo play though.

You don't make that much money on a F2P game where you can't even P2W if you try, unless you're damn solid.

Bit of advice for anyone trying it out: Learn to not get hit. There is no such thing as a tank in Dungeon Fighter. You can soak up quite a few hits early on, and potions restore a reasonable amount, but that goes away with time, so you can pretty much forget about being a defense/hp sponge. Even being about six levels too high for the stage I posted gameplay of, if I actually get caught by those enemies, I go from full health to like 25% health in about three seconds. Now the readily available potions restore less than 1/30th of my total health and have long cooldowns.

Another bonus is that you can run DFO on an abacus, so long as that abacus has an internet connection.

Maplestory's cash shop is a ridiculous cash grab, specially in how the game has no easy way in searching to sell or buy items and instead you have to BUY A TEMPORARY PERMIT to put up a store in a specific, extremely limited area and if you get the cheapest permit you have to stay logged in to keep your store open and then there's the fact that you can level up much faster by buying exp coupons and having a pet that vaccuums loot to you.

Cash in mabinogi lets you level faster and makes it easier to make your character stronger in general.

Nexon isn't one of the leading F2P gaming companies for nothing.

I'm not falling for this one.

Actually, Nexon has nothing to do with the game. The dev is running this by themselves, not with the much hated publisher.

I'm running a level 85 Striker in Chinese Dungeon Fighter (which has an actual gold/cash market that, if you have hundreds of dollars to blow, can net you top end weapons), and the only money I've spent on it was to make my avatar look fucking amazing:



The clothes give some bonuses, but they hardly make or break how I play because this is an action game, and so heavily dependent on playstyle and skill level. I could be way more twinked than I am right now without even having cash shop items. I'm still using a level 65 weapon with no elemental attack bonus.

They're using the same stat system as other versions (albeit several major updates old because they have to actually localize new content), and if anything, they'll probably give you MORE revival tokens than CDNF (the one I play) does. Old NA DFO used to give three tokens a day and start you with 10. CDNF starts you with 5 and gives you 1 every day IF you spent one the previous day. And that's more than I've ever needed.

You can get more stuff for money, but there's no real cash barrier to the game's content. You have to be really really awful at the game to need it.
