When I watched "Bowling For Columbine," I was surprised by the interviews with Marilyn Manson and the government officials. I was surprised, because Mr. Manson was actually an articulate, well spoken, thoughtful guy. I talked with someone about Lady Gaga, about her music, her fashion sense, her well-covered naughty bits, and realized that these people are smart. They're selling not just music, but their image as well. They're also able, with an identity that provides push to their beliefs and causes. Pink, the punk-rocker, is big on feminism and a member of PETA. Bif Naked follows the straight edge lifestyle, abstaining from drugs and alcohol, at the same time being a big name in punk rock.
The point is that these people are smart - they understand, and like, what they do and who they're doing it for. I recently watched the South Park movie again, and realized how clever it was. Talking of how important democracy is while strapping Terrance and Phillip into electric chairs isn't only ironic in that fact, but they whole debacle was started by denying civil liberties to the actors in the first place. I tuned into Robot Chicken and watched a few episodes with commentary on, and realized how intelligent Seth Green is. Robot Chicken is not astute social commentary by most standards, but it made me realize that satire or comedy is done intelligently. I'm not saying that someone has to be smart to parody something well, but it helps. It showed me that a lot of what goes out into the world has at least some thought behind it.
