Or, through judicious spot-checks when passing through tick-infested territory, you can prevent them from burrowing.
Although this works better when you're canoing. The only time you really have a chance to get ticks is at the camp and while portaging, and there's always a quick chance to check at the end of packing up, while loading boats, and before you hunker down.
