You should only try to build off a joke if the addition is funnier than the original. I suppose that's all rather subjective, but I feel your premise is shaky at best and only succeeds in diluting the humor of the original statement.

Wait, what, melting strawberries? Melting? Really? Last time I checked, strawberries were fruit. Fruit, what with all its cellulose and such, does not melt. Unless, of course, it's decomposed to a stage where an increase in temperature causes it to lose cohesion. And have you seen what a river of chocolate looks like? According to Ronal Dahl, it looks like sewage. Or, possibly blood.. Imagine the surface of that covered in a mush of slowly melting, fermenting fruit. Imagine the smell. Now imagine standing at the edge of that in London fog. What kind of fog? Why the kind they had when Industrial London was at its height! You know, when government regulation was just a bad dream, and workers got exploited and the factories! Oh, the factories, with their smokestacks, belching who-knows-what, wonderfully horrible gasses, lethal even. The smoke'd mix with the fog and there you'd have it, smog of the most wonderfull sort! Like walking through an acid rain shower.
