The Possibility of Mental Illness

I've been off the past few days and it's really been bothering me because it tend s to happen to me every now and then. My family and a psychiatrist I saw a long time ago suspected me of having Asperger's Syndrome but it never quite fit me.

Now I'm starting to worry because I checked some of my symptoms and they fit schizophrenia much better than AS. This scares the living hell out of me. Should I talk to my parents about this because I have no idea what I'm supposed to do in a situation like this. I just feel ashamed of admitting that there might be something wrong with me.

I'm only comfortable mentioning this here because nobody knows me personally and I figured someone has to have some good advice.

Although as a good fail-safe method of finding out if you have schizophrenia, you could always just ask those people in your head what they think.

Just to say, assuming you're using the DSM list of definitons, pretty much everything fits into schizophrenia under those definitions. Self diagnosis will cause massive troubles, you really have to get someone else to do you.

The very worst idea is self-diagnosing without following it up with a visit to the doc. It's a great way to end up driving yourself nuts about whether or not you might have [serious illness] and put yourself under extreme stress, or alternatively to dismiss something potentially serious as "oh it's just [harmless illness]," neither of which are what you want to do in the long run if you're seriously worried (and if you're worried enough to check your symptoms, you are seriously worried).

Whether ot not you tell your parents is another matter, although unless you know for a fact they'd react very negatively I'd gravitate towards "yes of course." If they already took you to a psychiatrist once, they're going to be at least somewhat prepared.

e2: I would actually recommend you disregard any advice from the internet that goes beyond "see a medical professional," or at least take it with massive amounts of salt. Even a forum filled with medical professionals will probably tell you little more than to see one.

That is very true. They can't examine you properly online.

Also also, sometimes the fear of having a problem make us believe that we actually have the problem... i'm pretty sure every single person in this forum can look at a chart of Symptoms for various Mental Diseases and come up with at least one or two "I-could-have-its" ... if you really think you might have a problem, check with a doctor. You could still be perfectly fine.

Gunslinger, to be a member of this forum, you have to have at least one medical "illness."

But in all seriousness, don't worry too much about it, man. Worrying'll make you stressed and whatnot. I know that sounds like an impossible task, but try to keep your mind off it. See the doctor and listen to what they have to say, but whatever they tell you shouldn't be a death sentence - worst case scenario they'll have you take a few meds, but they just want to talk to you and figure out what's going on first.

Don't worry about it, Mr. Slinger.
