So after playing this game far more than is healthy, I have beaten it with 100% completion.
Thoughts are as follows: Caius is probably the third best villain the main Final Fantasy series has seen. The combat is still really good, and I love the pokemon-styled changes, but neither Noel nor Serah feel as powerful as the cast of XIII, for a number of reasons. They're better at filling a wider variety of roles with ease, though. The plot has some weak moments, as almost all FF plots do, but on the whole I really enjoyed it and it has some really, really well done parts. The music is pretty good in spite of (or perhaps because of) the screamo chocobo song. Lots and lots and lots of sidequest stuff in this game. Absolutely fantastic in that respect. Only shitty ones are the quizzes and the one that makes you complete your bestiary. I liked pretty much the entire cast. They did some cool things with QTEs. And now I must ultimately come to... the ending. THAT ENDING. When I saw it, I was like, "Holy shit. That's awesome. Now to unlock the secret/true/complete ending." And then I did that and oh my God I can't stop fucking laughing. I can't believe they let Toriyama get away with this. Either we're stuck waiting for DLC to find out how the story ends, or we're waiting on them to announce XIII-3. The only problem is if XIII-3 was their plan, I'm worried they'll cancel it because, at least in Japan, the sales weren't that good for a Final Fantasy game released on console. Even with THAT ENDING, and in fairness I gotta say it's got some really memorable stuff going for it too, this is probably one of the better FF games that have come out and I really enjoyed it.

Does it start as slow as 13 did? I only get about 2 hours a week currently to play a game, and I never got anywhere with 13 when it was released. (I am trying to rectify this, but I still haven't gotten to the "fun" yet.)
If it does, I think I won't even bother.

Played the demo of this, didn't even finish it. I duno why either really, I liked XIII, but there was something about this that was just... off. Might have been the near identical combat system, or the QTEs, or maybe just the fact that I had no idea what was going on with the plot other than the really casual time travel that doesn't seem to care about causality (I really hate that).
Either way it didn't really impress. If I see it cheap in a few months I might take a look, but for now, I'll pass.

The demo make the games story look stupidly awful. I still bought the game because I enjoy the battle system that much. I just started playing it right now, and my first thought was going to be making fun of Noels name, but I realized that Final Fantasy games have never been good at making subtle character names.
In other news though, the change to real time character models, while necessary for saving space, makes the game way uglier. Kind of off putting when compared to XIII side by side.

I hate hearing that this might actually be fun because I think I have pretty much lost my taste for JRPGs at all.

I'm pretty torn, I may get it, may not. Maybe I'll just watch the inevitable Two Best Friends Play episode of it. I'm not sure.

Serious Question: What exactly looks so awful about the story?

Inside the demo it looked like ideas where just thrown at a wall and haphazardly pieced together. At least that's what it looked like from the very small idea I saw inside the demo. It first appeared to be a "You're now the main character. Annnnd go!"
Now that I'm actually playing the game, I see more and more what's going on. I guess it was always running in the back of my head that they made this game from all the cut parts of XIII, so I expect a story of all deleted scenes.
