In my continuous quest to poke around and see what new games exist in this world, i just came across Brick Force.
And it's essentially that... Minecraft with Counter strike. There are 2 Catches though, 1 good and 1 bad. So let's start with the positives... you can create and control your own maps! That's right. The same system you would have in minecraft is applied here to make your own block stages. Simply click and place the block. You could say that this is fairly simple tool to create you own map... a feature that by itself allow for most online FPS to improve greatly... There is the bad catch though, and it's the fact that although you don't HAVE to, there are options to pay for stuff... it's a Micro Transaction MMO. As far as i can tell so far, you CAN create your map, save it, have people come over and play on it... but there are some advanced publishing options that i'm not sure how they work... also, other players can download your map (and you can download maps where you played on) by pay "Block Points" which is the game's currency (that you win by playing or paying), so, you CAN invest to have a good map out there and make the rest of your payments by having people download your map... so there is that. THe shooting part is pretty basic stuff... you point and things, you shoot, they die, respawn, repeat... you have a Pistol, a Wrench, a pipe bomb and a Machine gun and you CAN buy new weapons and clothing or rent them for 7 days. So there is THAT also. So, right now let me just focus on the Map Making aspects of the game with some Pics ! You can pick several different typs of grids to build on, but the basic gist is 50x50 or 100x100 mostly the only other thing you get to pick is the Floor tiling... i piked Grass. There is also Sand and concrete options. The "Cost" of a Map is directly connected to the ammount of blocks you have down and the ground blocks do count, so 100x100 maps are more expensive. Also you can delete the ground blocks if you want or are not going to use them... The very first thing i did was to erect a basic house structure with mixed blocks ![]() ![]() You use a "Block Gun" for it, and it can place blocks up to 10m away from you. So that's handy. However, the block placement speed is slower than minecraft. Not too slow though, just slower. There are no Door Blocks, but there are transparent blocks that Bullets can break. So you can create windows. There are several other blocks i saw in the game that i don't know if you need to level up (yeah there is a leveling system) or if there is a option to use them or if you have to buy them up... but from Railing to Solid colors, there is a vast array out there... here i'm just using the basic stuff. As you can see, you can place a ladder on any block ![]() And here, you'll see that i'm standing of the edge of the map, looking at the opposite corner where my house is. And on that point i wanted to find the ceiling of the skybox. So i just keept on building upwards. So, this is how big a 50x50 map is... but how tall is it? ![]() I would say... it's pretty tall ![]() ![]() You can't fly or anything, all normal game physics apply (except fall damage and nobody has weapons in this mode). I made the tower by using the "Jump Place Block" technique of Minecraft until the game wouldn't allow me to do that anymore. So, with that said, this game allows for some really interesting vertical possibilities... And here as you can see, the game charges me Points (i can pick how i want to pay to publish my map) ![]() But i can set how much people need to pay to have my map (i suppose it means they can play on it offline or modify it... but i don't know yet) You also have to set what types of games you can have on this map... but i'm still not sure how to make that. Also not sure if having multiple styles of play will make a map be more expensive or not... Each map can hold up to 8 players (EDIT: you can CREATE a Map with 7 other players at the same time, or you can PLAY in a map with up to 16 in 2 teams), you can password lock a map. The master can kick anybody he wants, and it's a 200mb download overall (50 download and 150 update) and it's free... so it's totally worth it to goof around. I just don't know yet if it's worth to put any money for it... But hey, hell... people put more money down in steam sales on games they rarely ever play... considering how tall the skymap is and how easy it is to put this stuff up and running, i gotta tell ya... if it's not overly expensive, i would totally enjoy putting down some cash to map a awesome map in this... the shooting mechanics are just solid enough to make it worth it! I would be more interested, but the way that Freemium is handled is what generally sways my decision.
Gameplay-wise, it seems inspired by Blacklight Retribution's weapon rent/buy system (can you make a gun permanently owned in this?), and map-wise, it seels somewhat like how Tribes: Ascend wants you to pay Tribes Gold (a.k.a. Shazbucks) to host a server. Given that I'll have to wait for this to develop a little more before I make a verdict. |
