I am genuinely curious about this because yours is a viewpoint I see expressed all over the place by older generations in regards to technology and having a solid answer as to why it only seems to go one way would be great.

If someone has headphones in they don't want to talk. If someone is reading, they probably don't want to talk. The whole point of my post was to say, "If you don't like it, ignore it." Meaning if you don't want to talk to them, ignore them. That and making snap judgments about complete strangers is stupid. How is this a bad view to have?

Empathy and Sympathy are dead, I guess. Again, the whole point was "just ignore them". Don't want to talk to them? Ignore them.

If you try talking to a stranger and they don't want to talk to you, for whatever reason, it's not your business. It's not your business to get hung up on the reasons why. It's not your business to keep after them. Maybe they've had a bad day. Maybe their parents just died. Maybe you remind them of a dead cousin. Maybe they like you and are too shy/intimidated to talk. Maybe they hate your guts because they're racist/prejudiced. Maybe they think you look like a pedophile. Maybe they just don't want to talk to you. As I said: Not your business.

Maybe she's listening to an audio-rendition of an LotR fanfic as read by Ian Holm and she just got to the part where Legolas and Liv Tyler's character are about to make-out and you are ruining it by talking.

It's pretty simple, really. If they want to talk to you about their problems, if they're having any, they will. If they don't, leave them alone. Let it go. Go back to looking up anime videos on youtube, or LPs, or crossword puzzles, or angry NPF posts.

If a random stranger comes up to you and asks you how you're doing and you want to spill your guts, do it, it's your life. I generally talk to random strangers but that's just me...So if you ever see me out somewhere, I'll talk to you! (probably)

Note: if a stranger turns to you and calls you a shit eating turd master for no reason, then you can probably make it your business.

Also, I think you can assume, or at least it would be polite to give poch & co. the benefit of the doubt, that we all have a basic understanding of social contracts and are probably not going to go balistic on someone who merely attempts to initiate conversation with us. Some people pursue conversation with strangers to an umcomfotable degree and THAT is super inconsiderate and selfish of them and it is pretty clearly what is being referred to.
