They aren't robots. They're reploids. By the time Zero rolls around, reploids are so advanced that they are pretty much biological life. There are reploid children, and they grow old. Reploid sex organs aren't THAT much of a stretch. The only ones who even look roboty are ones that were made specifically for war.

Also, the (first?) time he died, it looked disturbingly like he was cut in half and his spine and guts were spilling out.
